Religious Goodness And Political Rightness written by Yong Huang and has been published by Burns & Oates this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Church and state categories.

"Religious Goodness and Political Rightness" offers a stimulating, timely examination of the liberal and communitarian approaches to the conflicts between people's religious ideas of the Good and their political ideas of the Right. Coming from a non-partisan perspective, Huang argues that liberalism fails to see that politics cannot be neutral to all religions by equally ignoring them all, while communitarianism fails to understand that politics based on one single religion may lead either to political sectarianism or totalitarianism in a religiously plural society.

Modern liberal democracy has been acclaimed by many Westerners as the world's greatest political system yet. However, it is increasingly clear from social science research and international politics that it has an alienating effect on many both within and without. The roots of this alienation lie in liberal political philosophy, with its individualistic assumptions, and the recent movement toward communitarianism has recognized this issue and sought to reject some of liberalism's damaging assumptions. However, this communitarianism as yet lacks a more positive shape, an identity apart from its critique of liberalism. This can be found in communitarian role pluralism, the voluntary assumption of multiple social roles by a given individual, along with their associated obligations. The coupling of an obligation-based approach to sociality--which is unmistakably communitarian--with role pluralism would promote empathy among individuals in society by helping them better understand the ups and downs of those who surround them. This will ultimately build relationships among individuals and lower the alienation which now plagues modern liberal democracy. This is demonstrated by application in three international situations.

With the assumption that democracy is the best form of government for any Muslim-majority state, I examine the main theories of modern democracy, liberalism and communitarianism, focusing on which one of the two theories are more compatible with Islam. An historical analysis of Islam seems to reveal a greater compatibility with communitarianism; however, with the introduction of nationalism, certain aspects of liberalism seem to become more compatible with Islam. This analysis of the compatibility and relationship of Islam and democracy focuses on moderate Islam and moderate democracies, rather than focusing more radical or conservative practices of Islam. With Turkey as an example of a functional democracy and Iraq as a developing democracy, I use the two states as case studies to analyze liberalism and communitarianism in practice.

Beyond Liberal Democracy written by Daniel A. Bell and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-10 with Philosophy categories.

Is liberal democracy appropriate for East Asia? In this provocative book, Daniel Bell argues for morally legitimate alternatives to Western-style liberal democracy in the region. Beyond Liberal Democracy, which continues the author's influential earlier work, is divided into three parts that correspond to the three main hallmarks of liberal democracy--human rights, democracy, and capitalism. These features have been modified substantially during their transmission to East Asian societies that have been shaped by nonliberal practices and values. Bell points to the dangers of implementing Western-style models and proposes alternative justifications and practices that may be more appropriate for East Asian societies. If human rights, democracy, and capitalism are to take root and produce beneficial outcomes in East Asia, Bell argues, they must be adjusted to contemporary East Asian political and economic realities and to the values of nonliberal East Asian political traditions such as Confucianism and Legalism. Local knowledge is therefore essential for realistic and morally informed contributions to debates on political reform in the region, as well as for mutual learning and enrichment of political theories. Beyond Liberal Democracy is indispensable reading for students and scholars of political theory, Asian studies, and human rights, as well as anyone concerned about China's political and economic future and how Western governments and organizations should engage with China.
