"This book explains both why the decline of our most precious fuel is inevitable and how challenging it will be to cope with what comes next."—Richard E. Smalley, University Professor, Rice University, and 1996 Nobel laureate With world oil production about to peak and inexorably head toward steep decline, what fuels are available to meet rising global energy demands? That question, once thought to address a fairly remote contingency, has become ever more urgent, as a spate of books has drawn increased public attention to the imminent exhaustion of the economically vital world oil reserves. Kenneth S. Deffeyes, a geologist who was among the first to warn of the coming oil crisis, now takes the next logical step and turns his attention to the earth's supply of potential replacement fuels. In Beyond Oil, he traces out their likely production futures, with special reference to that of oil, utilizing the same analytic tools developed by his former colleague, the pioneering petroleum-supply authority M. King Hubbert. "The bad news in this book is made bearable by the author's witty, conversational writing style. If my college econ textbooks had been written this way, I might have learned economics." —Rupert Cutler, The Roanoke Times

Suitable for MBA, EMBA, and executive education programs, this case uses the complexities of the oil industry to set the stage to unfold a stakeholder analysis on BP's growth and opportunity in the renewable energy sector. This public sourced case offers a discussion about the firm's overall strategy, post Gulf Oil spill, moving forward. The case describes how within a single decade, BP had emerged as one of the largest energy companies in the world. Within that scope, BP had an odd achievement: It had been building an alternative energy business and had gained a reputation as being an oil company with a regard for the environment. Then a series of preventable accidents, in the United States in particular, started to chip away at the firm's status. In a matter of five years, BP went from celebrating its most profitable period to finding itself selling assets while industry watchers wondered whether the company would survive after being responsible for the largest oil spill in the United States. Shortly following the Gulf oil spill, Robert Dudley, a legacy Amoco executive, was appointed to replace Tony Hayward, the beleaguered BP group chief executive and director. Besides the oil spill and ongoing cleanup, Dudley had slumping revenues (even before the Deepwater tragedy) and a huge rebuilding task ahead of him. Not only did he have a multinational energy company to run, but Robert Dudley had to rehabilitate the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem, compensate all who suffered loss as a result of the damage, and repair the firm's shabby reputation. Dudley needed to implement a sound long-term strategy. How would his former division--renewable energy and alternative activities--fit into his plans?

Poisoned Legacy written by Mike Magner and has been published by St. Martin's Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-07 with Social Science categories.

The story is all too-familiar: On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded, killing eleven workers and creating the largest oil spill in the history of U.S. offshore drilling. But, this wasn't the first time British Petroleum and its cost-cutting practices destroyed parts of the natural world. It also was not the first time that BP's negligence resulted in the loss of human life, ruined family businesses or shattered dreams. Journalist Mike Magner has been tracking BP's reckless path for years and, for the first time, focuses on the human price of BP's rise to power. From Alaska to Kansas to the Gulf, Magner has talked to people whose lives have been destroyed by BP's almost unparalleled corporate greed. When BP acquired an abandoned Kansas refinery in 1998, it discovered one of the most contaminated groundwater plumes in the U.S. Rather than begin a full cleanup, BP declared there was no cause for concern. A former schoolteacher alarmed by cancer cases in the town pushed her community to take BP to court. In 2005, an explosion at BP's Texas City refinery, operating with a raft of safety problems because of neglected maintenance, killed fifteen people including the mother and father of a young woman who was driving there to spend the Easter holidays with her parents. A year later, thousands of gallons of oil spilled onto Alaska's North Slope from a corroded BP pipeline. Following a hurricane, BP's Thunder Horse rig almost sank because of a flaw in its construction, and repair work exposed even more serious problems. Poisoned Legacy is the searing true story of the rise and fall of BP, a company that went from being a green maverick promising a world "Beyond Petroleum" to one of the most notorious corporate villains in history.

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 73, University of Hertfordshire (Business School), course: MA Marketing, language: English, abstract: British Petroleum is an international energy provider with a large degree of focus on both upstream and downstream oil assets and operations as well as continued diversification into alternative energy sources. It has a market capitalization of £117,929 million as at the close of business 29th March 2010. The 'Beyond Petroleum' campaign stemmed from late nineties and early noughties merger (Amoco) and acquisition (the Atlantic Richfield Corporation and Burmah Castrol) activity. BP approached Ogilvy PR with a brief to "Position BP as a new type of global energy company that confronts such difficult issues as the conflict between energy and environmental needs and takes actions beyond what is expected of an oil company." (Ogilvy, 2010 & Leopard, 2010) This 'green-washing' campaign went on to win two PRWeek Campaign of the Year awards in 2001, however in the same breath it did draw public criticisms from environmentally focused organizations citing a cynicism within BP. 'Beyond Petroleum' was a campaign that had twofold objectives looking to both demonstrate that BP were an industry leader with a unique position as a green and socially conscious oil and gas company as well as uniting several recently acquired companies as well as existing employees under one unified banner.
