Traditional education in statistics that emphasises significance testing leaves researchers and students ill prepared to understand what their results really mean. Specifically, most researchers and students who do not have strong quantitative backgrounds have difficulty understanding outcomes of statistical tests. As more and more people become aware of this problem, the emphasis on statistical significance in the reporting of results is declining. Increasingly, researchers are expected to describe the magnitudes and precisions of their findings and also their practical, theoretical, or clinical significance. This accessibly written book reviews the controversy about significance testing, which has now crossed various disciplines as diverse as psychology, ecology, commerce, education, and biology, among others. It also introduces readers to alternative methods, especially effect size estimation (at both the group and case levels) and interval estimation (confidence intervals) in comparative studies. Basics of bootstrapping and Bayesian estimation are also considered. Research examples from substance abuse, education, learning, and other areas illustrate how to apply these methods. A companion website promotes learning by providing chapter exercises and sample answers, downloadable raw data files for many research examples, and links to other useful websites. New to this edition is coverage of robust statistical methods for parameter estimation, effect size estimation, and interval estimation. A new chapter covers the logic and illogic of significance testing. This edition also addresses recent developments such as the new requirements of some journals for the reporting of effect sizes.

Annotation "The book is intended for applied researchers and students who may not have quantitative backgrounds. Readers will learn how to measure effect size on continuous or dichotomous outcomes in comparative studies with independent or dependent samples. They will also learn how to calculate and correctly interpret confidence intervals for effect sizes. Numerous research examples from a wide range of areas illustrate how to apply these principles and how to estimate substantive significance instead of just statistical significance. Additional alternatives to statistical tests are described, including meta-analysis, resampling techniques like bootstrapping, and Bayesian estimation."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Test scores are the go-to metric of policy makers and anxious parents looking to place their children in the best schools. Yet standardized tests are a poor way to measure school performance. Beyond Tests and Quizzes Because the drive toward external assessment speaks almost exclusively in terms of standardized testing, we need to be reminded of the internal purposes of assessment: measuring learning for both student and teacher so that instruction can be adjusted and improved. This book is written for college instructors who are striving to creatively change assessment practice to better reflect learner-centered teaching. It is intended to consider not only the multiple ways in which individuals learn content, but also the multiple avenues to assessment the variety of learning styles demands. Creative assessment is defined here as assessments that spin, twist, and reform what might be a standard kind of assessment in an ordinary classroom. Instructors should use these examples of creative assessment as starting points, and as the beginnings of an internal discussion on what matters most in the courses they teach: What components of each course count the most for solving a range of problems in the discipline? If facts are important, and they usually are, how can they be used to support a flexible approach to thinking, solving, considering options, and gathering and interpreting evidence? What are the facts not telling us? The approaches suggested in this book focus on learning, on what students can do as a result of learning, and on how teachers can observe what students do. The assessment models presented here include concept mapping, variable grading, learning logs, moving from memorization to analysis, making labs more practical, exams as learning experiences, web-based assessment, thinking styles, tracking learning over time, and assessment in the real world. Each translates to a range of academic settings and is easily adaptable for use by a variety of instructors in any discipline.

It is an exceptionally thoughtful assessment of assessment, and I am (along with anyone else who broods about education) much in your debt. Jerome Bruner, personal communication with the authorWhen this award-winning book was originally published in 1994, a review in the TES said: Beyond Testing is a refreshingly honest look at the dilemmas faci
