This thesis re-examines Jean-Leon Gerome's iconic painting The Snake Charmer (1879) in an attempt to move beyond the post-colonial interpretations that have held sway in the literature on the artist since the publication of Linda Nochlin's influential essay "The Imaginary Orient" in 1989. The painting traditionally is understood as both a product and reflection of nineteenth-century European colonial politics, a view that positions the depicted figures as racially, ethnically and nationally "other" to the "Western" viewers who encountered the work. My analysis does not dispute but rather extends and complicates this approach. First, I place the work in the context of the artist's oeuvre, specifically in relation to the initiation of Gerome's sculptural practice in 1878. I interpret the figure of the nude snake charmer as a reference to the artist's virtuoso abilities in both painting and sculpture. Second, I discuss the commercial success that Gerome achieved through his popular Orientalist works. Rather than simply catering to the market for Orientalist scenes, I argue that this painting makes sophisticated commentary on its relation to that market; the performance depicted in the work functions as an allegory of the painting's reception. Finally, I discuss the display of this painting at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, in an environment of spectacle that included the famous "Oriental" pavilions meant to dazzle and shock visitors. My overall aim in exploring these new ways to consider The Snake Charmer is to encourage alternative ways of discussing Gerome's Orientalist paintings more broadly.

Only one female artist, Henriette Browne 1829-1901, has been recognised in the canon of French Orientalist art. Beyond Browne, existing scholarship has not given due consideration to the impact of female art on French Orientalism; as a result women artists have been omitted from the Orientalist canon in France. Through empirical research, Mary Healy has databased primary documents relating to eighty-six women artists whose works of art can be placed in the canon of French Orientalism between 1860 and 1968. Many of these women, such as Marie Lucas-Robiquet (1858-1959) and Jeanne Thil (1887-1968), were highly successful artists in their day; yet, today, little to nothing is known about their artistic contributions. Forgotten French Women Orientalist Artists 1860-1968: Cross-Cultural Contacts and Western Depictions of Difference is the first full-length study dedicated to these women artists and the analyses of their Orientalist works of art. In addition to building on existing Orientalist scholarship, the database of French women Orientalists forms the basis of new theoretical frameworks which cross the disciplines of art history, culture studies and representation, colonial history, gender studies and post-colonial theory. Utilising an interdisciplinary approach in the interpretation of women's art, Healy not only aims to re-evaluate the field of French Orientalism, but also to contribute new art historical findings concerning east/west cross-cultural dialogues at the intersection of gender and cultural difference.

The late Edward Said remains one of the most influential critics and public intellectuals of our time, with lasting contributions to many disciplines. Much of his reputation derives from the phenomenal multidisciplinary influence of his 1978 book Orientalism. Said's seminal polemic analyzes novels, travelogues, and academic texts to argue that a dominant discourse of West over East has warped virtually all past European and American representation of the Near East. But despite the book's wide acclaim, no systematic critical survey of the rhetoric in Said's representation of Orientalism and the resulting impact on intellectual culture has appeared until today. He employs "critical satire" to parody the exaggerated and pedantic aspects of post-colonial discourse, including Said's profound underappreciation of the role of irony and reform in many of the texts he cites. The end result is a companion volume to Orientalism and the vast research it inspired. Rather than contribute to dueling essentialisms, Varisco provides a path to move beyond the binary of East versus West and the polemics of blame. Reading Orientalism is the most comprehensive survey of Said's writing and thinking to date. It will be of strong interest to scholars of Middle East studies, anthropology, history, cultural studies, post-colonial studies, and literary studies.

The debate on Orientalism began some fifty years ago in the wake of decolonization. While initially considered a turning point, Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) was in fact part of a larger academic endeavor – the political critique of “colonial science” – that had already significantly impacted the humanities and social sciences. In a recent attempt to broaden the debate, the papers collected in this volume, offered at various seminars and an international symposium held in Paris in 2010-2011, critically examine whether Orientalism, as knowledge and as creative expression, was in fact fundamentally subservient to Western domination. By raising new issues, the papers shift the focus from the center to the peripheries, thus analyzing the impact on local societies of a major intellectual and institutional movement that necessarily changed not only their world, but the ways in which they represented their world. World history, which assumes a plurality of perspectives, leads us to observe that the Saidian critique applies to powers other than Western European ones — three case studies are considered here: the Ottoman, Russian (and Soviet), and Chinese empires. Other essays in this volume proceed to analyze how post-independence states have made use of the tremendous accumulation of knowledge and representations inherited from previous colonial regimes for the sake of national identity, as well as how scholars change and adapt what was once a hegemonic discourse for their own purposes. What emerges is a new landscape in which to situate research on non-Western cultures and societies, and a road-map leading readers beyond the restrictive dichotomy of a confrontation between West and East.
