Of the limitations of its kingdom both in space and time, it will be inevitable that we should hereafter speak. But the religious history of the western world, and especially of the Britains great and greater, with their mighty offspring, the grandest republic known to history - is more than enough to justify what has been said. Indeed, to this reverent afi'ection of whole peoples for the Bible there is absolutely no parallel and no analogy elsewhere. For it would be futile to compare therewith the soldierly respect felt by the Mussulman for the orders given him by his Koran, or the mixture of literary pedantry and mystic aspiration with which the Vedantist or Buddhist scholar studies the ancient lore of his creed. Of the moral power exercised, within certain limits, by old eastern scriptures revealed in latter days to us by the industry of great scholars, there need be no question. But, for reasons far other than those imagined by our fathers, the Bible has found a place in the heart, soul, conscience, and afi'ections of common men, women, and children of the west, such as no Veda, nor Zend Avesta, nor Chinese classics, nor Koran ever had a chance of attaining. Excerpt from Principles of Biblical Criticism I should hardly have ventured of my own accord to have undertaken what at the present moment is so serious a task as the attempt to write on the criticism of the Bible. But when requested by others to undertake the task I did not feel that I was justified in declining it. The question is a most important one in itself, and at the present moment it is supremely so. The defence of the traditional belief in regard to the Old Testament is at present the unpopular, or as has been suggested to me by a friend, the "unfashionable" side of the question. I am aware that in undertaking it I shall incur a great deal of hostile criticism. I have no right to shrink from such criticism. I have myself criticized freely, perhaps in some cases unsparingly, the views to which I have felt compelled to take exception. I shall therefore have no reason to complain if I am criticized unsparingly myself. I have not, however, I believe, treated any of those with whom it has been my misfortune to differ, with unfairness or disrespect. Of course the Laudator temporal acti or the type of man who stepped reading thirty years ago, is still in our midst, and persists, from time to time, in chiming in, often in good faith. Is not this the presumption of science falsely so called? How have you come to hold this higher vantage ground of which you self-styled Higher critics boast? Can you furnish substantial grounds for your bold assertion that you are really wiser about some Bible questions than the Biblical authors themselves? How has your know ledge been increased a thousand-fold above even that of our immediate ancestors?
