This book explores the strange persistence of 'blasphemy' in modern secular democracies by examining how accepted and prohibited ways of talking and thinking about the Bible and religion have changed over time. In a series of wide-ranging studies engaging disciplines such as politics, literature and visual theory, Yvonne Sherwood brings the Bible into dialogue with a host of interlocutors including John Locke, John Donne and the 9/11 hijackers, as well as artists such as Sarah Lucas and Rene Magritte. Questions addressed include: What is the origin of the common belief that the Bible, as opposed to the Qur'an, underpins liberal democratic values? What kind of artworks does the biblical God specialise in? If pre-modern Jewish, Christian and Islamic responses to scripture can be more 'critical' than contemporary speech about religion, how does this affect our understanding of secularity, modernity and critique?

Blasphemy A Very Short Introduction written by Yvonne Sherwood and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with Religion categories.

In an increasingly secular world, 'blasphemy' is surely a defunct concept. And yet blasphemy (life God and religion) seems to be on the rise. In this Very Short Introduction Yvonne Sherwood asks why this should be the case, looking at factors such as the increased visibility of religious and racial minorities, new media, and the legacies of colonial blasphemy laws. Throughout, she uncovers new histories, from the story of accidentally blasphemous cartoons to the close associations between blasphemy, sex, and birth control, and asks why some 'blasphemies' have become infamous, while others have disappeared.

Most of the articles in this collection are written in response to objections raised against various aspects of Christianity. Although some of these objections come from unbelievers, several are from professing Christians who have been critical of the consistently God-centered system of theology, philosophy, and apologetics in Scripture. The objections from professing believers against the Christian faith exhibit patterns of reasoning that are remarkably similar to those found in unbelievers, including some of the intellectual habits and assumptions that underlie atheism. In connection with this, several of the articles examine some of the most treasured and ingrained doctrines that professing believers have invented in order to subvert the teachings of Scripture. They show that these traditional doctrines are not only unbiblical, but often even blasphemous.

Book Description This book presents the paralytic lowered through the roof, Joseph of Arimathea, Joanna, Ananias, Hymenaeus, Euodia, Ruth's family, and Cornelius, the centurion. It explores the nature and challenges of life as a first-century disciple. The book examines the faith of the paralytic and his friends as well as what it means for Joseph of Arimathea to be a true disciple. Grace and power are the subjects related to Ananias, God's messenger to Paul on the road to Damascus. Hymenaeus commits blasphemy, and Euodia and Syntyche allow us to consider the subject of reconciliation. The deaths of Ruth's husband, Elimelech, and her two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, lead us to examine issues related to physical death.Cornelius is a centurion and a Gentile. Jewish customs and challenges of being a Gentile are the focus of this study.Description of SeriesThis is a unique Bible study focused on obscure or lesser-known characters and events in the Bible. Each study has one or more major themes, such as: Angels, being Born Again, Courage, Death, Evangelism, Faithfulness, Forgiveness, Grace, Hell, Leadership, Miracles, the Remnant, the Sabbath, Salvation, Rebellion, Sovereignty, Thankfulness, Women, the World, Creation, and End Times. The totality of the investigation provides a broad and fresh understanding of the nature of God as we see Him through the eyes of people we may never have heard of. Because these characters and their stories are often easily overlooked, the material will be new to most participants. Most of the people chosen for these studies are unfamiliar because they were mentioned only a few times in Scripture - some only once. Others may have more recognizable names but their contribution is obscure. A few more should be familiar and are included because of their unique or particular contribution to kingdom work. For example, Shamgar is mentioned only twice in the Bible. One verse in Judges 3:31 tells his story and 5:6 simply establishes a timeline and says nothing more about him. Shamgar was a contemporary of Deborah. Judges 3:31 says that he killed 600 Philistines with his oxgoad. If I were Shamgar and I killed 600 Philistines with a stick, I would be hoping for a little more coverage than one verse! Then there is Nicodemus, with whom we associate the concept of being "born again." His name appears only 5 times in the Scriptures, all in one short passage in the book of John. Eve, although not really obscure, is included in order to investigate the creation story.

Blasphemy In The Christian World written by David Nash and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-16 with Religion categories.

Tracing the subject from the Middle Ages to the present, David Nash outlines the history of blasphemy as a concept - from a species of heresy to modern understandings of it as a crime against the sacred and individual religious identity. Investigating its appearance in speech, literature, popular publishing and the cinema, he disinters the likely motives and agendas of blasphemers themselves, as well as offering a glimpse of blasphemy's victims. In particular, he seeks to understand why this seemingly medieval offence has reappeared to become a distinctly modern presence in the West.
