Excerpt from Biblical Epochs The evolution of the Holy Scriptures was the slow, progressive work of ages. Revelation was not perfected by one single publication of what God would have men believe and know, but it was made by gradual steps of progress, by unfolding of truth as men were prepared to receive it. Its basal design was to develop the divine plan of salvation for mankind. This great purpose runs through it all like a band of gold through the entire woof of a costly fabric. Its occult announcement was made at the genesis of the Biblical narration; it was reiterated in type and prophecy, in signs and wonders, in sacrifice and law and poetry, until, in the fullness of time, all came to completion in the person and work and atoning death of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The Old Testament was a preparation for the New Testament. The Hebrew history was an introduction to the gospel of the Son of God. Excerpt from The Epoch of Creation: The Scripture Doctrine Contrasted With the Geological Theory The fact that God has made a revelation of his mind and will to man, may not be openly denied but while his Word is admitted and professedly respected, theories are broached at variance with its doctrines, or even irreconcileable with its origin; and which, being associated with all that currently passes for phi losophy and science, are, therefore, only the more imposing to those who would be held in repute for their mental independence and enlargement. Minds of this class are always the first to be captivated by anything which has the aspect of being a new view; and hence, should infidel sentiments ever obtain in the community, it will be chiefly through their influence. Excerpt from The Glacial Epoch and the Noachian Deluge The nineteenth century was an era of remarkable progress; but it was also an era of doubt. Developments along many lines contributed to these ends. Near its beginning compara tive methods of study were introduced, and scientific research was placed on a solid foundation. Inventions of divers sorts and kinds, all tending to revolutionize established methods of living, appeared one after another in civilized communities; and a spirit of unrest took possession of many people. Ques tions concerning things supposedly settled began to arise, and among them was that relating to the character and extent of the Biblical flood. Excerpt from Providential Epochs A series of lectures on Providential Epochs, intended for Christian young people, who were presumably taking up certain courses of reading along historical lines. The author's aim was simply to furnish an incentive to the more thor ough study of those events which had ever seemed to him demonstrative of the history shaping activity of Divine Providence. The limitations of a lecture precluded the possibility of exhaustive treatment. The author claims originality in nothing. He hopes for nothing more important to come of his book than a desire on the reader's part to know more of these great epochs by the study of the recog. Excerpt from Christian Epoch-Makers: The Story of the Great Missionary Eras in the History of Christianity The study of missions under the auspices of the various missionary Organizations is now being prosecuted by a multitude of people, young and old, with a great deal of hearty good-will and an energy most praiseworthy, but with very little system. It is certain that the result of such study will be the accumulation of a quantity of miscellaneous information about missions, but very little knowledge. The reading of some good general outline of missionary history is indispensable, if our young people would avoid a serious case of mental dyspepsia. It is not pretended that this is the only book available, but it is believed to have certain features that will make it both welcome and effective. At all events, the author cherishes the hope that whoever carefully studies Chris tian epoch-makers will find that, if he has learned less than he might have wished, he has nothing to unlearn. Excerpt from Epochs in the Life of Jesus: A Study of Development and Struggle in the Messiah's Work Springs, Mo., July, 1906, to an audience composed of ministers and a large and intelligent body of other Christian workers. The assembly requested the publication of the lectures. It is hoped that as pub lished they may be useful to some who desire a positive presentation of the career of Jesus in the light of modern knowledge and in full sympathy with the position given to Christ in the Gospels. No attempt is here made to tell the story of the life of Jesus, save as a brief summary now and then is necessary to the interpretation of that life. The at tention is rather called to the movement and climac teric power in the career of Christ. The historic forces of that life seem narrow from one point of view, but the current runs deep and swift. The turning points in the life of Christ are brought out sharply with less accent on other things, so that one may the better feel the titanic struggle that Jesus had with ecclesiastical tyranny and bigotry. If the reader can thus realize Jesus, he will find the Gospels luminous with fresh light. The lumber of learning is all left out here, that the attention of the reader may be focussed on Christ, who battled for human freedom in the most heroic of all conflicts. He won the freedom of the human spirit at the great est possible cost. The Gentiles can now indeed see Jesus without throwing any preachers into a panic.
