A comprehensive analysis of the ritual dimensions of biblical mourning rites, this book also seeks to illuminate mourning's social dimensions through engagement with anthropological discussion of mourning, from Hertz and van Gennep to contemporaries such as Metcalf and Huntington and Bloch and Parry. The author identifies four types of biblical mourning, and argues that mourning the dead is paradigmatic. He investigates why mourning can occur among petitioners in a sanctuary setting even given mourning's death associations; why certain texts proscribe some mourning rites (laceration and shaving) but not others; and why the mixing of the rites of mourning and rejoicing, normally incompatible, occurs in the same ritual in several biblical texts.

From Mourning to Praise approaches the subject of suffering and loss the way the Bible approaches it: with honesty. Regardless of how our experiences differ, you can know that God continues to love you and care for you. The purpose of this book is to show you how to plead your case before God during suffering. It will teach you how to seek Gods face in your dark hours. Then when God brings you to a place where you begin to discern his deeper work in your life, it will teach you how to offer meaningful praise for what he has taught you. Finally it will introduce you to one of the greatest blessings of suffering, the opportunity to reach out to others who experience suffering or loss. Here are some of the points that this book affirms: God cares when you suffer. God is with you when you suffer. The Bible gives you permission to throw aside your happy mask when you suffer. You have a right to complain about injustice and plead to God for justice. You have the freedom to be angry with Godout loud. God uses suffering to produce growth and character depth. Suffering produces deeper character than any pleasure can produce. Worship from a position of suffering can be far more meaningful than worship that is always happy. Drawing on the reality from the book of Job, the Psalms, and from the New Testament, From Mourning to Praise invites you to grieve Gods way while you wait for his deliverance.

Commentators are often disturbed by the presence of various speakers in the three poems of Lamentations 1 and 2, and Isaiah 51.9-52.2, the change of speakers being thought to disrupt the flow of ideas. This study shows that a close reading of all three poems in the light of their mourning ceremony setting displays a clear and consistent flow of thought. Purported cases of 'disruption' now fit into their present context as moments in which different mourners voice their pains and their questions aloud, and bring their incomprehensible sufferings to Yahweh their God and the creator of all.

Hope For The Brokenhearted written by Dr. John Luke Terveen and has been published by David C Cook this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-17 with Religion categories.

This book grew out of Dr. John Luke Terveen's own experience with grief and loss resulting from his fourteen-year-old daughter's death. he scoured books looking for comfort but found the Bible itself to be his greates source of hope, comfort, wise counsel, and encouragement. After reviewing more than 200 books on grief and loss, he discovered that none investigated biblical passages discussing grief and loss. He set out to fill the huge, unmet need for a book that helps Christians embrace relevant Scriptures more fully and seriously in the midst of their mourning. The biblical selections deal with the hard questions, honest passions, and divine hope that only one who has walked down the path of sorrow could write about. Topics such as resurrection, the second coming, heaven, the resurrection body, doubt, anger, guilt, and dashed dreams are covered with great care to minister to the hearts of those who are grieving.

A Liturgy Of Grief written by Leslie C. Allen and has been published by Baker Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-01 with Religion categories.

In Lamentations, we read of the unbearable grief experienced by a group of believers. Leslie Allen suggests the book can be read as the script of a liturgy performed to help the people of God come to terms with the fall of Jerusalem and the national catastrophe it entailed. It reveals God's sometimes hidden support for those who grieve and for their caregivers. In this unique commentary on Lamentations, respected Old Testament scholar and volunteer hospital chaplain Leslie Allen appropriates this oft-neglected book of the Bible to deal with a universal issue. Incorporating stories of pastoral encounters with hospital patients, Allen integrates Scripture and pastoral care to present a biblical model for helping those coping with grief. The book includes a foreword by Nicholas Wolterstorff, author of Lament for a Son.
