Speaking in Tongues follows the quest of Reverend Herbert Bell, Jr. to find out the Biblical truth about speaking in tongues. Throughout his book, he uses various biblical and pastoral sources to determine the origins of the practice of speaking in tongues. His biblical resource is the New King James Version of the bible from which he has also drawn all of the scriptures used in the book. He examines the writings of John Wesley, Dr. Curtis Hutson and James M. Frye to weigh their response to the practice of speaking in tongues. In John Wesley, he finds a voice who just wants his congregation to be able to understand his message. Like Wesley, he has endeavored in this book to present the material in a manner so that all who read it may understand and profit from its content. As he delves more deeply into the writings of Hutson and Frye, he finds two theologians who also share his view of speaking in tongues. With that as a basis, Reverend Bell decided to search the Scripture for himself so that he would learn what God required of him as he worshipped Him in Spirit and in Truth.

Much ink and venom have been spilled over the question of what tongues was in the New Testament and what, or even if, it should be today. Most of the dialogue on the topic has been p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 11.0px Verdana; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} rooted in denominational dogma, cultural tradition, and personal experience instead of clear exegesis of the NewTestament texts. Therefore, if anything in Acts or the rest of the New Testament is to be rightly understood, it must be read and understood within the socio-religious context of the people who first heard and read it. Within the New Testament, any theological or religious idea was understood by Hebrew/Israelite/Jewish people in the context of the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings, i.e., the Old Testament. It is within this framework that the issue of ‘tongues’ should be considered.

Unlike other commentaries that focus on debating if the gift of speaking in tongues exists or does not exist to the present day, Pentecostal Languages researches the history of tongues within Scripture. This work examines the origin of this phenomenal gift and its usage by prophets, kings, priests, angelic beings, songwriters, Jehovah, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit Himself. Since the Apostles and others made reference to the Septuagint (the first translation of the Hebrew Bible) in their quotations to establish the authority of Scripture, so also does author D. E. Didymus canvass this ancient work by comparing the Greek texts of the Septuagint and the New Testament. The Septuagint is translated from the most ancient and surviving Hebrew scrolls of the Torah.

The Biblical gift of speaking in tongues is the supernatural gift from God of speaking in a known foreign language to unbelievers without any previous knowledge or training in that language. And what is spoken in that foreign language is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The main purpose is in order that Christ and Him crucified would be preached to all nations in a language that the hearer would understand. Yet today, many wolves in sheep clothing have perverted what the true gift of speaking in tongues really is, and have replaced it with all sorts of false doctrines. This Bible study teaches verse by verse on this topic, teaching what the Bible says as compared to what the heretics of today have to say, who are deceiving Christians by telling them to pray in ecstatic utterance that was once only associated with demonic possession. And as you will see, a very dangerous doctrine is being spewed from the tongues of these false prophets.

Have you ever wondered why your prayer language doesn’t sound like real words? And why is it so repetitive? Why does it usually start with the same few words or syllables? Maybe you’ve asked those questions at times. We’ve asked the same questions—and quite a few others—regarding the gifts of tongues and interpretation of tongues. Then we sought the Lord for understanding of these gifts and did our best to operate in them faithfully. He gave us many insights and answers, and then brought it all together in a book. That was something we never really planned. It just sort of happened. We aren’t megachurch pastors. We don’t lead multi-national ministries. But we did have a calling from the Lord to write a book and spread a message. What exactly is that message? Speaking in tongues and interpreting tongues are powerful gifts with practical use for everyday people like us. When people operate in these gifts, God blesses the person operating in the gift, but He also blesses the people around them. Other Questions We Explore in the Book: What does speaking in tongues feel like emotionally? What is the purpose of speaking in tongues? What are the benefits? In considering this controversial theme, the author had a fivefold intent: To examine every passage in the New Testament dealing with the gift of tongues. To consider the significance of tongues in the Old Testament. The Apostle Paul indicated that God's purpose for the gift of tongues could be discovered in the Law (1 Corinthians 14:21-22). To study the gift of tongues from a dispensational point of view, in light of God's marvelous and yet distinctive programs for both Israel and the Church. To provide a definitive answer to the difficult question, When did tongues cease? To apply the rich truths of this study to the proper functioning and conduct of the local assembly of believers today.

What others are saying... As an AG minister, I was especially interested in Dr. Walston's discussion of this topic. I found his arguments lucid, biblical, exegetical, and convincing. Rev. Kevin Potts, Ph.D. Candidate, Chaplain Dr. Walston has thrown a 'big wrench' into my tongues-as-evidence doctrinal gears. I am now working through what I thought was a foundational doctrine that I also thought was settled long ago. This book should be required reading for people on both sides of this issue. Dr. Denny Nissley, AG minister, Director of Christ in Action Ministries Many books and articles have been written in defense of speaking in tongues as the unmistakable, physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Through his careful and thorough analysis of the Pentecostal texts in the Book of Acts, Dr. Walston is challenging this view. This book is beyond doubt one of the most thought-provoking analyses on this theme I have ever read. Nils-Olov Nilsson, Th.D., Swedish Missionary and Theologian with the Swedish Pentecostal Movement
