In 1996 the first volume of the CFM was published in the Series Coptica containing the edition of the first fascicle of the Manichaean Coptic Psalm-Book - Second Part by Gergor Wurst. Further volumes in the Chinese, Coptic, Latin and Uighur series will appear in a near future. All text volumes of the CFM contain not only the original text, and an apparatus criticus, but a translation in English, French or German too. Notes will be included as well as photographs. In the Subsidia of the CFM will be published handbooks, reference books and manuals. In the footsteps of earlier important bibliographical sections in books by e.g. Julien Ries (Les etudes manicheennes, Louvain, 1988) and Jes P. Asmussen (Studies in Manichaeism, Copenhagen 1965), the Danish scholar Gunner MIKKELSEN has prepared a new comprehensive bibliography of Manichaean studies in its largest perspective, encompassing 3606 numbered entries, fully updated to 1996, but already including a number of items published in 1997. The bibliography contains text editions and translations and scholarly contributions on the Manichaean religion and Manichaeism-related fields of interest (e.g. polemical, historical sources), either published as monograph or article, as well as reviews of these; a selection of works on so-called 'neo-Manichaeism' is also presented. The bibliography is subdivided in two sections: publications in (1) European and West Asian languages, and (2) in East Asian languages. The very useful index enumerates the text publications of Manichaean, anti-Manichaean and historical sources in all languages. This bibliography will undoubtedly form an indispensable working tool on the bookshelves not only of every scholar of the Religion of Light and Gnosticism, but will reveal the importance of this vast area of study to researchers in the fields of Classical, Oriental and Medieval Studies, History of Religions and Theology.

This is the first general comprehensive introduction to Manichaeism aimed at a non-specialist and undergraduate readership. This study will be a historical and theological introduction to Manichaeism. It will comprise a biographical treatment of the founder Mani, situating his personality, his writings and his ideas within the Aramaic Christian tradition of third century (CE) Mesopotamia. It will provide a historical treatment of the Manichaean church in late antiquity (250-700 CE), detailing the emergence of Manichaeism in the late Roman and Byzantine empires, in addition to examining the continuation of Manichaean traditions in the eastern world (China) up to the thirteenth century and beyond. The book will consider the theology of Mani's system, with the aim of providing a clear-eyed treatment of the cosmogonic, scriptural and ecclesiological ideas forming its foundations. The study will base its analysis on original Manichaean literary sources, together with rehabilitating the representation of Manichaeism in those writings that polemicised against the religion. The study will aim to demonstrate the highly syncretic nature of Manichaeism, and will look to move forward 'traditional' perceptions of the religion as being simply a form of Christian Gnostic Dualism.

The contributions in this volume were mostly first presented at the conference "Research on Nestorianism in China. Zhongguo jingjiao yanjiu 中國景教研究" held in Salzburg, 20– 26 May 2003. Like the conference, the volume explores the subject of "Nestorianism" (jingjiao, "Luminous Religion") in a variety of aspects. The material of the present collection is organized in five parts. The Manichaeans of the Roman East is the first monograph that synthesizes an enormous body of primary material to reconstruct the history of East-Roman Manichaeans, from the time their first missionaries arrived in the territory of the Roman East until the disappearance of Manichaeism from the Eastern Roman Empire. Through her systematically comparative and intertextual investigation of the sources, Matsangou provides a number of original approaches to issues such as the classification of Manichaeism, the socio-religious profile and lifestyle of East Roman Manichaeans, the triggers of the severe anti-Manichaean persecutions. She thoroughly analyses the relationship between Manichaean and Christian ascetics for the first time, suggesting a possible Manichaean impact on the rise of ascetic manifestations among Christian ascetics, monks, and individuals in society.
