La parution des actes du dix-huitième congrès de L’Africa Romana témoigne aussi bien de l’intérêt et de la vitalité de cette entreprise que de la poursuite d’une tradition désormais bien établie, qui se caractérise par l’ampleur des domaines envisagés. Ce volume s’ouvre donc sur (1) L’Africa Romana. I luoghi e le forme dei mestieri e della produzione nelle province africane. Atti del XVIII convegno di studio, Olbia, 11-14 dicembre 2008, édit. Milanese M., Ruggeri P. et Vismara C., Rome, 2010, 3 vol., 2325 p., ill., qui avait pour thème les lieux de production, les métiers et la production sous ses diverses formes dans les provinces africaines. (2) Mastino A., Intervento introduttivo, ibidem, p. 43-50, justifie le thème choisi pour ce congrès. Il part des données que peuvent fournir certains auteurs, notamment Virgile et Augustin, passe ensuite aux inscriptions, si utiles pour le sujet, avant d’évoquer l’importance de l’archéologie, dont il laisse à d’autres (voir n° suivant) le soin de parler. (3) Milanese M., Luoghi e forme dei mestieri e della produzione nelle province africane, ibidem, p. 51-67, complète cette introduction en traitant des aspects archéologiques du thème. Il souligne les possibilités permettant de mieux connaître la vie à la campagne, le rôle du marbre, l’importance de la céramique. L’examen des amphores débouche sur le garum, l’huile et le vin. L’urbanisme et l’urbanisation ne sont pas négligés dans cet article qui donne quelques références essentielles. Comme à l’accoutumée, quelques ouvrages, qui ont tous été signalés dans un précédent numéro de la B.A.A.A., ont fait l’objet d’une présentation. (4) Vismara C., Presentazione del volume di A. Cet ouvrage concerne l’Antiquité tardive, les périodes vandale et byzantine. Une préface élogieuse de N. Duval montre tout le bien qu’il faut en penser. On y trouvera matière à réflexion notamment, mais pas exclusivement, sur la notion de domus, sur Carthage, Sufetula et Leptis Magna. (5) Ead., Presentazione del volume In Africa et in Hispania : études sur l’huile africaine, a cura di A. Mrabet e J. Remesal Rodríguez, ibidem, p. 93-97 (B.A.A.A., XLI, 2007 [2013], n° 137). The Roman empire set law at the center of its very identity. A complex and robust ideology of law and justice is evident not only in the dynamics of imperial administration, but a host of cultural arenas. Citizenship named the privilege of falling under Roman jurisdiction, legal expertise was cultural capital. A faith in the emperor’s intimate concern for justice was a key component of the voluntary connection binding Romans and provincials to the state. Even as law was a central mechanism for control and the administration of state violence, it also exerted a magnetic effect on the peoples under its control. Adopting a range of approaches, the essays explore the impact of Roman law, both in the tribunal and in the culture. Unique to this anthology is attention to legal professionals and cultural intermediaries operating at the empire’s periphery. The studies here allow one to see how law operated among a range of populations and provincials—from Gauls and Brittons to Egyptians and Jews—exploring the ways local peoples creatively navigated, and constructed, their legal realities between Roman and local mores. They draw our attention to the space between laws and legal ideas, between ethnic, especially Jewish, life and law and the structures of Roman might; cases in which shared concepts result in diverse ends; the pageantry of the legal tribunal, the imperatives and corruptions of power differentials; and the importance of reading the gaps between depiction of law and its actual workings. This volume is unusual in bringing Jewish, and especially rabbinic, sources and perspectives together with Roman, Greek or Christian ones. This is the result of its being part of the research program “Judaism and Rome” (ERC Grant Agreement no. 614 424), dedicated to the study of the impact of the Roman empire upon ancient Judaism.

Tous les volumes de la B.A.A.A. sont différents. Si chacun respecte la même organisation générale, les chapitres présentent un contenu spécifique : certaines périodes, certains thèmes sont dotés, selon les années, de publications plus ou moins nombreuses. Il convient de saluer la naissance, en 2012, d’une nouvelle revue algérienne, Ikosim. Cette année se signale aussi par la publication du colloque de L’Africa romana qui s’est tenu en 2010 et qui, tous les deux ans, est l’un des grands rendez-vous de l’année : le XIXe colloque avait réuni de nombreux spécialistes de l’Afrique antique autour du thème des territoires et des paysages de pouvoir.
