Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Geschichte Europas - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 1,0, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf (Historisches Seminar), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Das illustrierte Flugblatt war in der Frühen Neuzeit ein weit verbreitetes Massen-medium. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird mit den Kometenflugblättern eine Gat-tung aus dem vielfältigen Themenspektrum der Flugblätter jener Zeit vorgestellt. Die Untersuchung beschränkt sich zwar, bis auf eine Ausnahme, auf Flugblätter aus dem deutschen Sprachraum, jedoch lassen sich viele der an deutschen Flug-blättern gewonnen Ergebnisse auch auf die Nachbarländer übertragen. Bei der Betrachtung der Kometendrucke wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob die Kometen-flugblätter als ein Symptom einer Krise des 17. Jahrhunderts betrachtet werden können. Wenn dem so ist, müsste die Kometenfurcht im 17. Jahrhundert beson-ders groß gewesen sein und sich der Prodigienglaube in dieser Zeit verstärkt ha-ben. Im Folgenden soll dagegen gezeigt werden, dass die Furcht vor Kometen zu allen Zeiten und bis in die Gegenwart ein Teil der menschlichen Gesellschaft war und die Flugblätter selber zum Krisenbewusstsein im 17. Jahrhundert beitrugen, indem sie Ängste schürten und als Instrument der Sozialdisziplinierung und Pro-paganda benutzt wurden. Die Prodigieneigenschaft von Kometen steht also im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung, was dazu führt, dass eine Eingrenzung bei den zu behandelnden Flugblät-tern vorgenommen werden muss. Behandelt werden ausschließlich Kometenblät-ter, welche die Kometen als göttliche Vorzeichen betrachten.

After the Reformation the successful painter Paul Lautensack (1477/78-1558) dedicated himself to spreading revelations on the nature of God. Lautensack was besides Dürer the only German artist who wrote against the iconoclasts, and he believed that he as a painter could explain the images of Revelation better than theologians like Luther. He presented his insights in hundreds of highly sophisticated diagrams that display a wide range of material accessible to an urban craftsman, from the vernacular Bible to calendar illustrations. This study is the first monograph on this extraordinary man, it presents a corpus of his surviving works, analyzes his peculiar theology of the image and locates the elements of his diagrams in the visual world of the Reformation period.

During the early modern period, the emergence of what ultimately became modern science took place mainly in Latin, the international language of educated discourse of the era. Hundreds of thousands of scientific texts were published in Latin from the invention of print around 1450 to the demise of Latin as a language of science around 1850. Despite its importance, our knowledge of this literature is extremely limited. This book aims to provide an overview of this area, the first ever to be written. It does so, not from the perspective of a natural scientist or a historian of science, but of a literary scholar. Instead of the scientific content or methodology of the respective works, it focusses on the genres of scientific literature and their communicative functions. Latin Scientific Literature, 1450-1850 falls into two main parts. The first part ('Contexts') introduces four aspects of early modern intellectual culture which are crucial for an understanding of the scientific literature of the time: the development of science, the role of Latin, the concept of literature, and the rise of print. Part two ('Texts'), offers an overview of Neo-Latin scientific literature. Subsumed under five communicative functions - disclosing sources, presenting facts, arguing for certain positions, summarizing knowledge, and publicizing science - twenty pertinent genres are discussed.
