It is our duty to discover our symbolic interiority. The purpose of this book is to bring to the reader different interpretations of logos, deities and religions whose symbolic expression had its genesis in architecture. Many of the Indo-European deities in their essence were portrayed as abstract forms and numbers, in a quest to learn mathematics and geometries associated with the universal. An example of this is the cult of Apollo who was worshiped at Delphi as a cube, or the God Min in Egypt, one of the oldest deities in the world, who represented for that ideology not only numbers, but also the first bricklayer's rule, center of religions strongly rooted in the architectonic. On his arm was represented the Egyptian elbow, ruler or modulor on which the space to be made sacred was organized. The Universe for these peoples personified a fundamental hill, surrounded by a mass of salty water crowned by a symbol in the shape of a potter's wheel, and at the top of which was a philosopher's cube, the most sacred space or house of Horus. For many world cultures such as the Hindu or the Cherokeé in North America, the world was supported by a turtle whose shell It had drawings of hexagonal sides, like many of the trees of life in the Indo-European world, such as the "Fu-sang" tree in China. This book covers a series of events and mythologies associated with the art of construction, from the universal symbolism of the cardinal points and the circle of the earth, to the temple of Jerusalem and its creator King Solomon, passing through numerical symbolism, symbolism Koranic of the water, that of the mosque, the dome and the cathedral, all these symbols endowed with their primordial and infinite heritage.

Is the display of number and geometry in medieval religious architecture evidence of intended symbolism? This book offers a new perspective in the retrieval of meaning from architecture in the Greek East and the Latin West, and challenges the view that geometry was merely an outcome of practical procedures by masons. Instead, it attributes intellectual meaning to it as understood by Christian Platonist thought and provides compelling evidence that the symbolism was often intended. In so doing, the book serves as a companion volume to The Wise Master Builder by the same author, which found the same system implicit in plans of cathedrals and abbeys. The present book explains how the architectural symbolism proposed could have been understood at the time, as supported by medieval texts and its context, since it is context that can confer specific meaning. The introduction locates the study in its critical context and summarizes Christian Platonism as it determined the meaning of number and geometry. The investigation opens with the recurrent symbolism of the dome and the cube as heaven and earth in the Byzantine world and moves to the duality of the temple and the body in the East and West as reflections of Plato's universal macrocosm and human microcosm. The study then examines each of the figures of Platonic geometry in the architecture of the West against the background of their mathematics and metaphysics, before proceeding to their synthesis with the circle, as seen in circular and polygonal structures, the divisions of circles in Christian art, and their display in window tracery, culminating in the rose window. In view of the multivalency of the symbolism, the investigation establishes systematic occurrences of it, which strongly suggest patterns of thought underlying systems of design. The book concludes with a series of test cases, which show the after-life of the same symbolism as it overlapped with the Renaissance.

Garish churches, gabled panel blocks, neo-historical tenements—this book is about these and other architectural oddities that emerged in Poland between 1975 and 1989, a period characterised by the decline of the authoritarian socialist regime and waves of political protest. During that period, committed architects defied repressive politics and persistent shortages, and designed houses and churches which adapted eclectic historical forms and geometric volumes, and were based on traditional typologies. These buildings show a very different background of postmodernism, far removed from the debates over Robert Venturi, Philip Johnson, or Prince Charles in Western Europe and North America—a context in which postmodern architecture stood not for world-weary irony in an economically saturated society, but for individualised counter-propositions to a collectivist ideology, for a yearning for truth and spiritual values, and for a discourse on distinctiveness and national identity. Postmodern Architecture in Socialist Poland argues that this new architecture marked the beginning of socio-political transformation and at the same time showed postmodernism's reconciliatory potential. In light of massive historical ruptures and wartime destruction, these buildings successfully responded to the contradictory desires for historical continuity and acknowledgment of rupture and loss. Next to international ideas, the architects took up domestic traditions, such as the ideas of the Polish school of historic conservation and long-standing national-patriotic narratives. They thus contributed to the creation of a built environment and intellectual climate that have been influential to date. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars interested in postmodern architecture and urban design, as well as in the socio-cultural background and transformative potential of architecture under socialism.
