The Architecture of the Bight of Biafra challenges linear assumptions about agency, progress, and domination in colonial and postcolonial cities, adding an important sub‐Saharan case study to existing scholarship on globalization and modernity. Intersected by small creeks, rivulets, and dotted with mangrove swamps, the Bight of Biafra has a long history of decentralized political arrangements and intricate trading networks predating the emergence of the Atlantic world. While indigenous merchants in the region were active participants in the transatlantic slave trading system, they creatively resisted European settlement and maintained indigenous sovereignty until the middle of the nineteenth century. Since few built artifacts still exist, this study draws from a close reading of written sources—travelers’ accounts, slave traders’ diaries, missionary memoirs, colonial records, and oral histories—as well as contemporary fieldwork to trace transformations in the region’s built environment from the sixteenth century to today. With each chapter focusing on a particular spatial paradigm in this dynamic process, this book uncovers the manifold and inventive ways in which actors strategically adapted the built environment to adjust to changing cultural and economic circumstances. In parallel, it highlights the ways that these spaces were rhetorically constructed and exploited by foreign observers and local agents. Enmeshed in the history of slavery, colonialism, and the modern construction of race, the spatial dynamics of the Biafran region have not been geographically delimited. The central thesis of this volume is that these spaces of entanglement have been productive sites of Black identity formation involving competing and overlapping interests, occupying multiple positions and temporalities, and ensnaring real, imagined, and sometimes contradictory aims. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of architecture, architectural history, urban geography, African studies, and Atlantic studies.

Architecture As Measure written by Neyran Turan and has been published by Actar this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Architecture categories.

In light of the current political crisis around climate change, what can architecture possibly contribute towards a new planetary imaginary of our contemporary environment beyond environmentalism and technological determinism? Instead of conceptualizing the idea of the environment as purely natural and in need of protection, as solely a problem that needs to be managed, or merely as the Earth, which limits the scope with a scalar bias, can we speculate on architecture as a measure both to assess and to act upon the world? 'Architecture as Measure' is an elaboration on this question, and on the disciplinary and cultural potentials of such a provocation. It positions climate change as a cultural and political idea that requires a renewed architectural environmental imagination.0The book takes on this task by presenting a set of unconventional collisions between architecture and climate change, which all extrapolate broader concerns of the city, environment, and geography through the lens of specific architectural questions such as form, representation and materiality.

Imagining the future of cohabitation in Venice and beyond Conceived as a record that delves deeper into a special section of the Biennale Architettura 2021, Co-habitats comprises essays and photo essays that pertain to specific geographic locations. While the main exhibition is primarily organized in five parts that contemplate a new spatial contract at five scales--as diverse beings, as new households, as emerging communities, across borders and as one planet--this volume showcases analytical examples of how we come together at all five of them in and around Venice, as well as in Addis Ababa, Beirut, India, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, New York, Prishtina and more.

Where did the term ?amplifying nature? come from? What does it mean that light oscillation, gravity and water circulation are materials of architecture? Where in the history of Polish architecture do we look for planetary design? Can a building be as dynamic as a climate? What has the roof got us used to and can we get unused to it?0The book that accompanies the Amplifying Nature exhibition, presented with the participation of CENTRALA ? Malgorzata Kuciewicz and Simone De Iacobis, with the collaboration of Iza Tarasewicz and Jacek Damiecki at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition ? La Biennale di Venezia, uses examples of local Warsaw projects, proposing a reconfiguration of the narratives on architecture-in-nature and nature-in-architecture. In its optics, a planetary scale is necessary for architectural analysis: the Earth in a geological-astronomical system as a system supporting life as we know it.00Exhibition: Polish Pavilion, 16th Architecture Biennale, Venice, Italy (26.05. - 25.11.2018).

"The Fondazione Prada presents between 1 June and 3 November 2013 at Ca’ Corner della Regina in Venice an exhibition entitled “When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013” curated by Germano Celant in dialogue with Thomas Demand and Rem Koolhaas. In a surprising and novel remaking, the project reconstructs “Live in Your Head. When Attitudes Become Form,” a show curated by Harald Szeemann at the Bern Kunsthalle in 1969, which went down in history for the curator’s radical approach to exhibition practice, conceived as a linguistic medium." - See more at: http://moussemagazine.it/55vb-fondazione-prada/#sthash.PpxmEBXE.dpuf.
