This study develops an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of the cultural history of the German Democratic Republic, examining the interaction between intellectuals and Party functionaries from a literary and historical perspective. Divided into three case studies, the work focuses on writers positioned along a spectrum of conformity and dissent and who had quite different relationships to political power: Hermann Kant, Stefan Heym and Elfriede Brüning. Drawing on and comparing unpublished archive material, autobiography and the literary output of the three named writers, this study brings to the fore the ambiguities and contradictions of intellectual life in the GDR. Tensions between the different sources point towards tensions inherent in the subject positions of writers, publishers, reviewers and cultural authorities. This granular approach to the study of GDR cultural history challenges top-down interpretations and builds into a theoretical understanding of GDR cultural life based on the concepts of ambiguity and ambivalence and the increasing fragmentation of ideology. Comparison with other spheres of GDR life points towards the significance of these concepts for the study of East German society as a whole.

Der Streit zwischen Peter Hacks (1928–2003) und Heiner Müller (1929–1995) zählt zu den bedeutendsten Auseinandersetzungen innerhalb der DDR-Literatur. Auf der Grundlage detaillierter Stückanalysen sowie unbekannter Aufzeichnungen aus den Nachlässen wird der Streit der beiden wichtigsten DDR-Dramatiker erstmals umfassend in den Blick genommen. Im Fokus stehen ein literarhistorischer sowie ein systematisch-ästhetischer Aspekt: Die Arbeit zeichnet zum einen die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Hacks und Müller als bedeutende Teilgeschichte des DDR-Dramas sowie der Brecht-Schule nach. Darüber hinaus untersucht sie die dramenästhetischen Programme beider Autoren als antagonistische Konzeptionen sozialistischen Theaters. Innerliterarische Konflikte bilden in der Forschung zur DDR-Literatur bis dato einen ‚blinden Fleck‘. Am Beispiel von Hacks und Müller zeigt sich, dass der ästhetische Autonomisierungsprozess der DDR-Literatur als ein in sich selbst widersprüchlicher Vorgang innerhalb des literarischen Feldes verstanden werden muss. So ist die Arbeit auch ein Beitrag zur Frage, inwiefern sich die Feldtheorie auf die Literatur der DDR anwenden lässt.

With the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, four decades of separation seemed to have been brought to an end. In the literary arena as in many others, this seemed to be the surprising but ultimately logical end to the situation in which, after the extreme separation of the two Germanies' literatures during most of the period up to 1980, an increasing closeness could be observed during the 1980s, as relations between the two German states normalized. With the opening up of the East in the Autumn of 1989 claims were being made, on the one hand, that German literature had never, in fact, been divided, while others were proclaiming the end of East and West German literatures as they had existed, and the beginning of a new era. This volume examines these claims and other aspects of literary life in the two Germanies since 1945, with the hindsight born of unification in 1990, as well as looking at certain aspects of developments since the fall of the Wall, when, as on East German put it in 1996, rapprochement came to an end.

When the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was founded in 1949, its leaders did not position it as a new state. Instead, they represented East German socialism as the culmination of all that was positive in Germany's past. The GDR was heralded as the second German Enlightenment, a society in which the rational ideals of progress, Bildung, and revolution that had first come to fruition with Goethe and Beethoven would finally achieve their apotheosis. Central to this founding myth was the Germanic musical heritage. Just as the canon had defined the idea of the German nation in the nineteenth-century, so in the GDR it contributed to the act of imagining the collective socialist state. Composing the Canon in the German Democratic Republic uses the reception of the Germanic musical heritage to chart the changing landscape of musical culture in the German Democratic Republic.
