Excerpt from The Business of Government in the State of California The situation is distinctly different, however, when it comes to the opera tions of a government. All the people are concerned. Such an institution does not engage in the business of government for the purpose of earning money for itself, but - Socialism to the contrary notwithstanding - to bring about and maintain conditions so that the people who compose it may, among other things, earn money for themselves. Thus its universal power to aid or harm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Age of Big Business Author: Burton J. Hendrick Americans had begun, it is true, to exploit their more obvious, external wealth, their forests and their land; the first had made them one of the world's two greatest shipbuilding nations, while the second had furnished a large part of the resources that had enabled the Federal Government to fight what was, up to that time, the greatest war in history. But the extensive prairie plains whose settlement was to follow the railroad extensions of the sixties and the seventies--Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, Minnesota, the Dakotas--had been only slightly penetrated. This region, with a rainfall not too abundant and not too scanty, with a cultivable soil extending from eight inches to twenty feet under the ground, with hardly a rock in its whole extent, with scarcely a tree, except where it bordered on the streams, has been pronounced by competent scientists the finest farming country to which man has ever set the plow. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Excerpt from The Business Record of a Business Government To no matter affecting the progress of the people of British Columbia has the Provincial Government paid more attention than to that of education. Indeed, it may be said that the entire department has been reorganized, mainly 1n the direction of vesting to a very large extent all local responsi bility in boards of school trustees. Thus, with few excep tions, including remote and thinly settled localities, the school districts into which the province is divided have been given power to assess themselves for the maintenance of the schools. The local departments are, of course, to some extent subject to the regulations of the general Department of Education, but the result has been a very markedly beneficial one, tending towards a higher system of education, with greatly improved facilities. Excerpt from Years of Plunder: A Financial Chronicle of Our Times Before this the government had been largely in the hands of Big Business. Convinced of its righteousness, honestly enough, it set out to mold the social and eco nomic order in its own image and, to a large extent, it succeeded. Despite the growing rumblings of discon tent, despite the opposition of such a formidable force as the first Roosevelt, it succeeded on the whole in mak ing the rich richer, whether or not it made the poor poorer. Big Government And Affirmative Action written by Jonathan Bean and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-21 with Political Science categories.

David Stockman, Ronald Reagan's budget director, proclaimed the Small Business Administration a "billion-dollar waste—a rathole," and set out to abolish the agency. His scathing critique was but the latest attack on an agency better known as the "Small Scandal Administration." Loans to criminals, government contracts for minority "fronts," the classification of American Motors as a small business, Whitewater, and other scandals—the Small Business Administration has lurched from one embarrassment to another. Despite the scandals and the policy failures, the SBA thrives and small business remains a sacred cow in American politics. Part of this sacredness comes from the agency's longstanding record of pioneering affirmative action. Jonathan Bean reveals that even before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the SBA promoted African American businesses, encouraged the hiring of minorities, and monitored the employment practices of loan recipients. Under Nixon, the agency expanded racial preferences. During the Reagan administration, politicians wrapped themselves in the mantle of minority enterprise even as they denounced quotas elsewhere. Created by Congress in 1953, the SBA does not conform to traditional interpretations of interest-group democracy. Even though the public—and Congress—favors small enterprise, there has never been a unified group of small business owners requesting the government's help. Indeed, the SBA often has failed to address the real problems of "Mom and Pop" shop owners, fueling the ongoing debate about the agency's viability.
