Die deutschsprachige Bildwissenschaft hat in Japan große Resonanz gefunden, die allerdings weitestgehend auf das heimische Publikum beschränkt geblieben ist. Fragestellungen um die bildliche Gestaltung von „Natur", „Kunst" und „Wissen" haben dabei eine eigene kulturelle Note erhalten, die durch den japanischen Verständnishorizont geprägt ist. Hinzu kommt eine unbefangene Einbeziehung der Neurologie, wie sie sich in Deutschland bisher nicht durchsetzen konnte. Bilder als Denkformen versammelt erstmals übersetzte Textbeiträge zur europäischen Kulturgeschichte und empirischen Ästhetik, die ausgewählten deutschen Positionen gegenübergestellt sind. Die Bildwissenschaft wird hierbei als gemeinsamer methodischer Rahmen diskutiert, der kulturelle Perspektiven sichtbar machen soll, ohne experimentelle Erkenntnisse auszuschließen.

Cold has always been of fundamental importance to human culture, but it was not until the industrial age that possibilities of artificial cooling were invented which are taken for granted today. However, colling was also accompanied by new possibilities for gaining knowledge. The frozen movement became a metaphor for technical still life, and without cryogenics, there would be no modern computing and imaging processes. Such possibilities of ice-cold observation are contrasted by losses of visibility, due to frost or precipitation, just as the artificial lowering of temperatures fuels climate change precisely through its energy consumption. Cooling technology is reaching new lows and highs in every respect – with extensive consequences for knowledge and perception.

The credibility of the traditional psychoanalytic method of inter- preting literature is lacking both within the field of literary and of psychoanalytic studies. In conjunction with a discussion of the untenable hypotheses and analogies that have formed the basis of traditional psychoanalytic involvement with literature, this work evaluates the psychoanalytic theory and conceptualizations that are relevant to the study of literature. Its premise is that the literary symbol functions in a reader's cognitive-affective responses to a text, which constitutes a psychological synthesis of text and reader identities.

Moderne Gesellschaften begreifen sich selbst als Wissensgesellschaften. - - "Wissen" steht hierbei sowohl für eine individuelle Schlüsselqualifikation der einzelnen Bürger als auch für die gesellschaftliche Voraussetzung für Innovation. Die notwendige "Wissenschaftlichkeit des Wissens" wird zum einen durch ihre (empirische) Belegbarkeit und Überprüfbarkeit und zum anderen durch eine Analyse ihrer historischen Gewachsenheit gewährleistet. - - In diesem Sinne trägt Wissenschaftsgeschichte nicht nur zur Selbstvergewisserung - wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen und zur Analyse historischer Zusammenhänge, - sondern auch zur Identitätsfindung moderner Gesellschaften bei. - - Im September 2006 wurde das "Aachener Kompetenzzentrum für Wissenschaftsgeschichte" (AKWG) gegründet. Ziel des AKWG ist es, die wissenschaftshistorischen Kompetenzen unterschiedlicher an der Rheinisch-Westfälischen Technischen Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen vertretener Disziplinen zusammenzuführen. Dabei liegt dem AKWG ein weites Verständnis von Wissenschaftsgeschichte als Geschichte der spezifischen Art und Weise der überprüfbaren Auseinandersetzung mit der Welt, unter Einschluss des Menschen als geistigem Wesen, zugrunde. - - Neben Historikern unterschiedlicher Fachrichtungen (Medizin-, Technik-, Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte) und Epochen (Alte Geschichte, Mittelalterliche Geschichte, Frühneuzeitliche Geschichte, Neuere und Neueste Geschichte) gehören ihm auch Wissenschaftstheoretiker sowie Literaturwissenschaftler und Informatiker mit "historischen" Forschungsinteressen an. - - Diese Zusammensetzung verweist bereits auf ein weiteres Ziel des Zentrums: die intensivierte interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit. - - Der vorliegende Sammelband ging aus einem "Thementag Wissenschaftsgeschichte" - hervor, der am 14. Juni 2007 an der RWTH ausgerichtet und von Gerhard Müller- - Strahl (Institut für Geschichte, Theorie & Ethik der Medizin) moderiert wurde. - - An diesem Tag stellten Mitglieder des AKWG wissenschaftshistorische und -theoretisch Beiträge aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und Epochen zum Thema "Visualisierung" vor. - - Auch wenn die den Referaten folgenden Diskussionen an dieser Stelle nicht aufgenommen werden konnten, so geben die Beiträge, die von nahezu allen Referenten dankenswerter Weise für den Abdruck zur Verfügung gestellt wurden und durch Arbeiten weiterer Mitglieder des AKWG ergänzt werden konnten, doch deutliche Hinweise auf die - Bedeutung interdisziplinären Austausches und auf das erkenntnisgewinnende Potential - wissenschaftshistorischer Forschung.

Children's bibles are one of the main media in the past and present Protestant religious education, but only recently, in the last three decades, scholarship focused on this topic. It is remarkable that there has only been little research on illustrations as a decisive element of children's bibles though. In this book the author responds to this desideratum and develops a systematic approach that enables us to analyse pictorial conceptions relevant for both a whole children's bible and a single illustration by itself. The author distinguishes a variety of intentions and functions of pictures. These newly developed pictorial conceptions contribute to interpret illustrations in old and new children's bibles in a fresh and surprising way.
