Wohl kein zweiter Roman hat gerade die linke Intelligenz dieses Landes in den letzten Jahren so nachhaltig beschäftigt wie "Die Ästhetik des Wider stands"l von Peter Weiss, deren drei Bände jeweils im Abstand von drei Jah ren 1975, 1978 und 1981 erschienen sind. Zusammen mit den "Notizbüchern 1971-1980"2, die 1981 gemeinsam mit dem abschließenden dritten Band der Trilogie publiziert wurden, nimmt dieser Text zumindest in den 70er und 80er Jahren in der deutschsprachigen Literatur eine markante Sonderstellung ein. Von der nachhaltigen Wirkung, die Weiss' Text bisher ausgeübt hat, zeugen 3 neben den zahlreichen Rezensionen , die die sperrige Prosa kommentiert haben, sowohl die rege Seminartätigkeit an den Hochschulen als auch zahlrei 4 che private Lesegruppen. Wenn die Anzeichen nicht trügen, scheinen diese Aktivitäten nicht zuletzt angesichts der nachhaltigen postsozialistischen Er nüchterung heute jedoch rückläufig zu sein. Damit wäre allerdings noch nicht das Urteil besiegelt, die "Ästhetik des Widerstands" habe möglicherweise nach dem Untergang des Sozialismus ihre politische Bedeutung und kulturelle Be rechtigung verloren, weil ihr Autor hartnäckig von der notwendigen und auch Peter Weiss, Die Ästhetik des Widerstands. Roman, (dreibändige Ausgabe in einem Band, 1975, 1978, 1981), Frankfurt/M. 1983. - Zitatbelege im Text werden mit der Sigle (ÄdW) in Klammem, der Bandnummer in römischer und der Seitenzahl in arabi scher Ziffer abgekürzt. -Auf die verspätete Ausgabe des Henschelverlages in der DDR (Berlin 1983), die zahlreiche Textabweichungen enthält, werde ich in dieser Arbeit nicht zurückgreifen.

Memory Matters juxtaposes in tripartite structure texts by a child of German bystanders (Wolf), an Austrian-Jewish child-survivor (Klüger), a daughter of Jewish émigrés (Honigmann), a daughter of an officer involved in the German resistance (Bruhns), a granddaughter of a baptized Polish Jew (Maron), and a granddaughter of German refuges from East Prussia (Dückers). Placed outside of the distorting victim-perpetrator, Jewish-German, man-woman, and war-postwar binary, it becomes visible that the texts neither complete nor contradict each other, but respond to one another by means of inspiration, reverberation, refraction, incongruity, and ambiguity. Focusing on genealogies of women, the book delineates a different cultural memory than the counting of (male-inflected) generations and a male-dominated Holocaust and postwar literature canon. It examines intergenerational conflicts and the negotiation of memories against the backdrop of a complicated mother-daughter relationship that follows unpredictable patterns and provokes both discord and empathy. Schaumann’s approach questions the assumption that German-gentile and German-Jewish postwar experiences are necessarily diametrically opposed (i.e. respond to a “negative symbiosis”) and uncovers intersections and continuities in addition to conflicts.
