A Badge of Injury is a contribution to both the fields of queer and global history. It analyses gay and lesbian transregional cultural communication networks from the 1970s to the 2000s, focusing on the importance of National Socialism, visual culture, and memory in the queer Atlantic. Provincializing Euro-American queer history, it illustrates how a history of concepts which encompasses the visual offers a greater depth of analysis of the transfer of ideas across regions than texts alone would offer. It also underlines how gay and lesbian history needs to be reframed under a queer lens and understood in a global perspective. Following the journey of the Pink Triangle and its many iterations, A Badge of Injury pinpoints the roles of cultural memory and power in the creation of gay and lesbian transregional narratives of pride or the construction of the historical queer subject. Beyond a success story, the book dives into some of the shortcomings of Euro-American queer history and the power of the negative, writing an emancipatory yet critical story of the era.

"Aesthetics and Anthropology" is a collection of contributions by an international and interdisciplinary team of authors from the fields of anthropology, performance studies, curatorial studies and the arts. The title refers to the paths that lead to the in-betweens and the beyonds of aura and trace in the representation of life that is performed in aesthetic reflexivity. Aesthetic reflexivity refers not only to the authors' attempts at an interdisciplinary encounter with one another, but also to their encounter with the readers, and with the recipients of an intended message in an aesthetic dialogue. Our approach is innovative in that it looks upon aesthetics as a "topos of the living". We seek to capture the present discourse of ethnographic and aesthetic disciplinary "turns" with the intent of bringing them together in theory and practice. Here, academics and artists approach one another's respective forms of representation in a "Gesamtkunstwerk" of texts and images. The book presents experimental approaches and interdisciplinary "turns", and hoped-for interactions between anthropologists and artists, and recipients of aesthetic encounters. We believe this is presently the most innovative pathway to interdisciplinary encounters with aesthetics. You, the readers, meet us, the artists and authors of an aesthetic reflexivity. Die Avantgarden des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts haben sich nicht, wie behauptet wurde, totgelaufen oder sind gar gescheitert. Die nationalsozialistische Diktatur hatte die Avantgarde zwar in Deutschland vernichtet, zugleich löste sie aber eine Welle der Emigration aus. Viele der Unterdrückten gingen in die USA, wo sie eine Avantgardisierung der Kunstwelt bewirkten. Das ermöglichte nachfolgenden Generationen, das in Europa unvollendet gebliebene Projekt fortzuführen. Walter Benjamin hatte den Terminus »Politisierung der Kunst« für die Bemühungen der Avantgardisten geprägt, die sich einer »Ästhetisierung der Politik« entgegenstemmten. Es wird kunstsoziologisch gezeigt, dass diese Saat in den kulturellen Zentren der USA aufging. Den Impetus der Avantgardisten, die Funktion der Kunst in der Gesellschaft zu verändern, griffen künstlerische Bewegungen in Kalifornien und New York auf. Drawing on unpublished documents and oral histories, an illustrated examination of an iconic artwork of an artist who has made a lifework of tactical evasion. One wintry day in 1983, alongside other street sellers in the East Village, David Hammons peddled snowballs of various sizes. He had neatly laid them out in graduated rows and spent the day acting as obliging salesman. He called the evanescent and unannounced street action Bliz-aard Ball Sale, thus inscribing it into a body of work that, from the late 1960s to the present, has used a lexicon of ephemeral actions and self-consciously “black" materials to comment on the nature of the artwork, the art world, and race in America. And although Bliz-aard Ball Sale has been frequently cited and is increasingly influential, it has long been known only through a mix of eyewitness rumors and a handful of photographs. Its details were as elusive as the artist himself; even its exact date was unrecorded. Like so much of the artist's work, it was conceived, it seems, to slip between our fingers—to trouble the grasp of the market, as much as of history and knowability. In this engaging study, Elena Filipovic collects a vast oral history of the ephemeral action, uncovering rare images and documents, and giving us singular insight into an artist who made an art of making himself difficult to find. And through it, she reveals Bliz-aard Ball Sale to be the backbone of a radical artistic oeuvre that transforms such notions as “art,” “commodity,” “performance,” and even “race” into categories that shift and dissolve, much like slowly melting snowballs.
