In einer Gegenwart, die von inflationär verbreiteten Bildern ebenso besessen wie überfordert scheint, könnte das individuelle - künstlerische oder private, stille oder bewegte - Bild von Bedeutungsverlust bedroht sein. Während die Disziplin der "Bildwissenschaft" seit den 1990er Jahren suggeriert, es gebe eine Wissenschaft vom Bild an sich, betrachtet die Autorin in zwei Einzelbänden historische und aktuelle "Bildkulturen" auf ihren je eigenen Gehalt an Wissen und Geschichte. Bildkulturen II entwickelt in Anlehnung an ikonologische Strategien der Kunstbetrachtung exemplarische "Lesarten" für rund dreißig ausgewählte aktuelle Künstlerbeiträge aus den Bereichen Fotografie, Malerei und Installation. Die Werkpositionen werden den Themenfeldern Wissen und Wahrnehmen, Raum und Ordnung, Landschaft sowie Individuum und Gesellschaft zugeordnet. In der assoziativen Zusammenschau vertiefen sie ästhetische Grundfragestellungen zu einer "praktischen Theorie von Bildern". Die Texte entstanden seit der Berufung der Autorin als Professorin an den Fachbereich Gestaltung der Fachhochschule Bielefeld 2001.

Bildkulturen I erörtert eine Auswahl von Problemstellungen (z.B. Repräsentation, Ordnung, soziale Distinktion) und ästhetischer Kategorien (z.B. das Schöne, das Erhabene), die zur Entwicklung von visuellen Programmen beitragen. Der Gebrauch von Bildern - zur Stimulation, Dekoration oder Argumentation - findet einen vorläufigen Höhepunkt in der Bildwerdung des Individuums selbst z.B. durch Strategien modischer Inszenierung in "performativen Kulturen". Das Themenspektrum reicht dabei von der barocken Hoftafel über das "lebende Bild" (Tableau Vivant) bis zur zeitgenössischen Modefotografie. Die Texte entstanden zum größten Teil seit der Berufung der Autorin als Professorin an den Fachbereich Gestaltung der Fachhochschule Bielefeld 2001.

Domestic devotion has become an increasingly important area of research in recent years, with the publication of a number of significant studies on the early modern period in particular. This Special Issue aims to build on these works and to expand their range, both geographically and chronologically. This collection focuses on lived religion and the devotional practices found in the domestic settings of late medieval and early modern Europe. More particularly, it investigates the degree to which the experience of personal or familial religious practice in the domestic realm intersected with the more public expression of faith in liturgical or communal settings. Its broad geographical range (spanning northern, southern, central and eastern Europe) includes practices related to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This Special Issue will be of interest to historians, art historians, medievalists, early modernists, historians of religion, anthropologists and theologians, as well as those interested in the history of material religious culture. The Serpent Column, a bronze sculpture that has stood in Delphi and Constantinople, today Istanbul, is a Greek representation of the Near Eastern primordial combat myth: it is Typhon, a dragon defeated by Zeus, and also Python slain by Apollo. The column was created after the Battle of Plataia (479 BC), where the sky was dominated by serpentine constellations and by the spiralling tails of the Milky Way. It was erected as a votive for Apollo and as a monument to the victory of the united Greek poleis over the Persians. It is as a victory monument that the column was transplanted to Constantinople and erected in the hippodrome. The column remained a monument to cosmic victory through centuries, but also took on other meanings. Through the Byzantine centuries these interpretation were fundamentally Christian, drawing upon serpentine imagery in Scripture, patristic and homiletic writings. When Byzantines saw the monument they reflected upon this multivalent serpentine symbolism, but also the fact that it was a bronze column. For these observers, it evoked the Temple's brazen pillars, Moses' brazen serpent, the serpentine tempter of Genesis (Satan), and the beast of Revelation. The column was inserted into Christian sacred history, symbolizing creation and the end times. The most enduring interpretation of the column, which is unrelated to religion, and therefore survived the Ottoman capture of the city, is as a talisman against snakes and snake-bites. It is this tale that was told by travellers to Constantinople throughout the Middle Ages, and it is this story that is told to tourists today who visit Istanbul. In this book, Paul Stephenson twists together multiple strands to relate the cultural biography of a unique monument.
