Das Buch stellt eine Neufassung des Begriffs vor, die von der Annahme ausgeht, dass Bildung in einer grundlegenden Veranderung der Art und Weise besteht, in der Menschen sich zur Welt, zu anderen und zu sich selbst verhalten, und dass solche Prozesse ausgelost werden, wenn Menschen mit neuen Problemlagen konfrontiert werden, zu deren Bewaltigung ihre bisherigen Mittel und Moglichkeiten nicht ausreichen. UNter Bezug auf Konzepte aus Padagogik, Philosophie, Soziologie und Psychologie wird eine Theorie transformatorischer Bildungsprozesse entfaltet, die ein Grundproblem der Padagogik neu und anders zu denken erlaubt.
