Generally, outside of the academic word, nomads are not considered as the part of the civilization process. Most of the times, due to the Eurocentric thoughts that were developed in the 19th century, scientific and technological improvements of the humanity were considered unique to Europe. Therefore, other people that were conquered by European armies were thought that they were completely out of the civilization process and the lived as ‘barbarians’ because they did not live or think like Europeans. According to this view, if they will civilize or they can be considered as ‘developed nation’, they had to live like Europeans, at least, they had to have same cultural attitudes or they must mimic. This bias made hard to understand how other cultures lived and what they developed in their material culture. However, during the 20th century, this linear and positivist understanding of history have been changed. In this book, first of all intellectual process on scientific progress was evaluated and then, the place where the Turks could be placed in this progress was examined.

Osmanlı medeniyeti için bu iki hükmün (önermenin) hangisine itibar ederseniz ediniz; şu gerçek değişmeyecektir: Osmanlı Medeniyeti ömrünü bir Tarım İmparatorluğu olarak tamamlamıştır. Bir başka şekilde ifade edecek olursak; en ihtişamlı yüzyıllarından ömrünün son yıllarına kadar oldukça büyük bir dünya coğrafyasına sahip olmasına; bu coğrafyada büyük hacimlerde ve yaygınlıkta bir ticarî faaliyete sahne olmasına rağmen Osmanlı Medeniyeti ne Merkantilizm’e ne de onun çocuğu olan Ticarî Kapitalizm aşamasına geçememiş; ömrünü bir Tarım İmparatorluğu olarak tamamlamıştır. Buna karşılık hasmı ve kapı komşusu olan Avrupa, Tarım Medeniyeti aşamasından önce Merkantilizm’e, ardından “Ticarî Kapitalizm”e, onun ardından da “Endüstriyel Kapitalizm”e intikal etmiştir. Avrupa’nın bu ilerleme sürecine çok geçmeden -aslında neredeyse eş zamanlı olarak- Kuzey Amerika da (ABD) iştirak etmiş; bu iki dünya el’an içinde yaşamakta olduğumuz Modern Uygarlığı yaratmışlardır. Modern Uygarlığın iktisadî sistemi ise “Endüstriyel Kapitalizm” olmuştur. Peki, ne olmuştur ya da olmamıştır da Osmanlı Medeniyeti Modern Uygarlığı yaratan ya da onun teşekkülünde önemli paya sahip bir fail olamamıştır veya olmamıştır? Bir başka şekilde sorulacak olursa; Batı’yı “Endüstriyel Kapitalizm”e ve Modern Uygarlığa taşıyan dinamikler ne idi ve bunlar Osmanlı Medeniyeti’nde yok mu idi? Batı’yı “Endüstriyel Kapitalizm”e, ardından da Modern Uygarlığı yaratmaya götüren temel dinamik; “nesnel ve olgusal varlık aleminde” meydana gelen/gelmekte olan oluş ve olguların “ne”liğine ve “nasıl”lığına yönelik “Batı’lı İnsan”ın ilgisi ve merakı olmuştur. Bu ilgi ve merak “Batı’lı İnsan”ı “pozitif bilimsel bilgi”ye ve onun imkânlarının keşfine götürmüştür. Bu ilgi ve merak “Osmanlı İnsanı”nda olmayan bir şeydi. “Osmanlı Zihni”, varlık âlemini teşkil eden eşyayla (maddeyle) bilgi ilişkisine, eşyanın (maddenin) dışında ve uzağında kalarak girişiyor; eşyadaki (maddedeki) oluş ve olguları nesnel ve olgusala olarak değil “hikemî” olarak idrak etmeye çalışıyor; bu şekilde elde etmiş olduğu duygu ve/veya sonuçları subjektif olarak idrak ediyor; bu bilgi ve bunun edilme yöntemini esas alarak buradan bir anlam dünyası inşa ediyordu. Bir başka şekilde söyleyecek olursak; Osmanlı İnsanı “eşyanın (maddenin) hakikatini” maddenin kendisinden değil, kendi sübjektif (öznel) tecrübesinden elde ediyordu. Bu bilgi ise nesnel olgusal değil “mistik” ve “hikemî” bir bilgi türüydü. “Batı’lı İnsan”la “Osmanlı İnsanı” arasındaki bu bilgi edinme yöntemi ve bunun sonuçları, iki farklı dünya, iki farklı hikâye yaratmıştır. Bu hikâyenin Osmanlı’ya ait olanı tarihsel olarak sahneden çekilmiş, buna mukabil Batı’ya ait olanı bugün bir başka evreye (Dijital Uygarlık) geçmiş olarak insanoğlunu bilinmez ve belki de tehlikelerle dolu bir geleceğe götürmektedir. Bu Kitap’da bu iki farklı dünya, bu iki farklı hikâye anlaşılmaya ve anlatılmaya çalışılmıştır.”
