The Proposed Nordic Saami Convention written by Nigel Bankes and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-31 with Law categories.

In 2005 an expert group representing the governments of Norway, Sweden and Finland, and the Saami parliaments of these countries agreed upon a draft text of a Nordic Saami Convention. Key parts of the text deal with the recognition of Saami land and resource rights. More recently the three governments have embarked on negotiations to move from this draft text to a final convention that may be adopted and ratified by all three countries. Negotiations commenced in the Spring of 2011 and should be completed within five years. This collection of essays explores the national and international dimensions of indigenous property rights and the draft Convention which recognises the Saami as one people divided by international boundaries. Part one of the book seeks to provide a global and theoretical context for these developments in the Nordic countries, with a series of essays dealing with the moral and legal reasons for recognising indigenous property interests and different conceptualisations of the relationship between indigenous peoples and settler societies, including recognition, reconciliation and pluralism. Part two of the book examines some international legal issues associated with the Convention, including the background to the Convention. Part three turns to examine aspects of the recognition of Saami property interests in each of the three Nordic states, while Part four provides some comparative experiences, examining the recognition of indigenous property rights in a number of jurisdictions, including Canada, Australia and a number of South American states. An additional essay considers gender issues in relation to indigenous property rights.

This volume examines the various ways popular music has been deployed as anti-establishment and how such opposition both influences and responds to the music produced. The book's contemporary focus (largely post-1975) allows for comprehensive coverage of extremely diverse forms of popular music in relation to the creation of communities of protest. The Resisting Muse examines how the forms and aims of social protest music are contingent upon the audience's ability to invest the music with the 'appropriate' political meaning.

Childhood And Human Value Development Separation And Separability written by Lee, Nick and has been published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-07-01 with Social Science categories.

"At the centre of Nick Lee's new book is a subtle exploration of the 'separability' of adults and children. Through this the recent emergence of children as participants in social life is given a fresh perspective, one that is unsettling to opponents and proponents of children's rights alike. Crucial to this, he addresses the relationship between children and adults as part of their shared but problematic human becoming, thus setting out what should, in my view, be the main terrain of childhood studies. This is a book that all scholars of childhood should read and from which they will gain immensely." Alan Prout, Professor of Sociology, University of Stirling For millennia children have been valued as possessions - valued by their parents as ‘my’ child and valued by communities and cultures as ‘belonging’ to them. Recently, a new way of valuing children has emerged – valuing them as people in possession of themselves, as people who have rights. This has led to fears that rights will erode love between parents and children, and separate children from their communities and cultures. Childhood and Human Valueexplains why people feel this way and argues that they are mistaken. Adults in modern societies have separation anxieties about children’s rights, because they are used to measuring human value against a standard of ‘separateness’. The more separate you appear to be from the opinions and control of others, the more valuable you seem. This highly original and accessible book shows us how to resolve the conflict between ‘love’ and ‘rights’ in contemporary relationships between adults and children. Examining a number of Twentieth Century developmental thinkers, including Vygotsky, Winnicott, Gilligan and Deleuze and Guattari, Nick Lee argues that a more flexible and realistic understanding of the sources of human value is available to us, based on ‘separability’. Childhood and Human Valueis key reading for students in a variety of fields including sociology of childhood, family studies, sociology of education, psychology of development, and childhood studies. It is also of interest to professionals who work with children, for example social workers, teachers, and the police.

This book focuses on the role of education in relation to music and gender. Invoking a concept of musical patriarchy and a theory of the social construction musical meanings, Lucy Green shows how women's musical practices and gendered musical meanings have been reproduced, hand in hand, through history. Covering a wide range of music, including classical, jazz and popular styles, Dr Green uses ethnographic methods to convey the everyday interactions and experiences of girls, boys, and their teachers. She views the contemporary school music classroom as a microcosm of the wider society, and reveals the participation of music education in the continued production and reproduction of gendered musical practices and meanings.
