Niemand kann sich vorstellen, welche Motive einen Menschen veranlassen, seinen Kindern, Ehepartnern oder seinen Mitmenschen derartiges Leid zuzufügen. Unter anderem möchte ich hier – bei den möglichen psychologischen Grundlagen eines solchen Verhaltens – mit meiner Arbeit ansetzen und meinen Fokus deshalb nach einer allgemeinen Definition des Begriffes Trauma auf die Traumata in Folge menschlicher Aggressivität und Gewalt in Kindheit und Jugend richten– insbesondere auf familiäre Gewalt, physischer, psychischer oder sexueller Art. Denn aufgrund meiner langjährigen Beschäftigung mit dem Thema „Gewalt“ und „Verhaltensstörungen“ stelle ich die These auf, dass die Ursachen dieser beiden Phänomene in den meisten Fällen, insofern biologische Ursachen ausgeschlossen werden können, in bestimmten Erfahrungen zu suchen sind. Da Erfahrungen auch immer grundlegend von der Gesellschaft, in der ein Kind aufwächst, geprägt sind, möchte ich des Weiteren auf die aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Umstände eingehen und die Frage erörtern, inwiefern sie einen Nährboden für Traumatisierungen darstellen.

Overcoming the Odds looks closely at the lives of an ethnically diverse group of 505 men and women who were born in 1955 on the Hawaiian island of Kauai and who have been monitored from the prenatal period through early adulthood by psychologists, pediatricians, public health professionals, and social workers. Werner and Smith trace the impact of a variety of biological and psycho-social risk factors and stressful events on the development of these individuals, most of whose parents did not graduate from high school and worked as semiskilled or unskilled laborers. Incorporating vivid case study accounts with statistical analysis, the authors focus on both the vulnerability and the resilience of those who overcame great odds to grow into competent and caring adults.
