Excerpt from Viajes por España y Portugal Desde la Edad Media Hasta el Siglo XX: Divagaciones Bibliograficas Pude intervenir en los infernales estruendos de esta bélica sinfonía, y desaparecer, dejando per-didas para to dos mis hojas de viaje, donde, a pesar de su aridez, ha 50 plado un respiro de amor; y a nadie extrañará mi deseo de salvarlas por imperfectas yffragrnentarias que sean. Como me acompanaron durante un largo periodo de mi vida y fueron testigos de mis experiencias, de mis ansias y dolo res, reflejan mis gustos e inclinacion-es, mis estudios, mi pro pia personalidad. Las lagunas que se advierten se deben a falta de conocimientos sobre las literaturas de algunos pue blos que me son poco familiares; la abundancia acaso exce siva, de algunos pormenores fundase en el manejo más dies tro de libros y memorias que preferentemente consulto, pues, siendo italiano de origen, me obligó mi suerte a des empen_ar una cátedra por más de diez años en una Universi dad alemana, y me siento impulsado, por una disposición fatal e irresistible de naturaleza, a investigar las relaciones literarias entre las varias naciones latinas y germánicas. Puede ser el relato de viaje una efusión lirica, como una exposición modesta y sencilla, de lo visto y conocido; una descripción, una crónica, un registro, un itinerario de ca mino; a veces interesa al poeta, al artista; mueve nuestra fantasía, nuestro corazón; despierta un mundo de imágenes; iñtensiñca nuestras visiones; otros relatos obedecen a una concepción mecánica y positiva dela vida: miran a lo prác tico, a lo útil; apuntan nombres de localidades y de perso nas con perfecta (indiferencia hacia la vida íntima de la nación que recorren, y no merecen otra atención que la del documento de un peregrino en una época determinada. Fal tando sensación de lo próximo, espontaneidad de expresión. Una conmoción sincera del alma el hielo apaga la luz intelec tual del amor. La vida del hombre no es sino una continua peregrinación. Su destino, sus experiencias, son las de un viajero por el valle terrenal que habitualmente llenamos de lágrimas. The bibliography volume of the three-volume East Looks West: East European Travel Writing in Europe collates travel writing published in book form by east Europeans travelling in Europe from ca. 1550 to 2000. It is intended as a fundamental research tool, collecting together travel writings within each national/linguistic tradition, and enabling comparative analysis of such material. It fills an important gap in the existing reference literature, both in western and east European languages, and will be of use to those working in the growing fields of comparative travel writing, regional and national identities, and postcolonialism.These texts exist in surprisingly large numbers, and include writings of high literary quality as well as of historical interest, but they have been relatively little studied as a genre. Much of this material is rare and difficult to find, even in national libraries. As a result, there are few bibliographical surveys of the literature of east European travel and self-representation, and none that are region-wide or comparative in scope. This is the third volume of a three-part set of East Looks West, Vol. 1 - An Anthology of East European Travel Writing on Europe; and Vol. 2 - A Comparative Introduction to East European Travel Writing on Europe.
