En la obra de la independencia de su pais que desde los primeros años del presente siglo fué iniciada, por el espíritu mismo de la época, en aquellas espléndidas regiones, el nombre de Bolívar fué conocido ya entre sus compatriotas; y desde el momento en que se le vé aparecer afiliado á la santa causa de la libertad, por su mérito personal es honrado con el alto cargo de los intereses de Venezuela cerca de los poderosos gobiernos de las naciones europeas.Aun cuando no se hallase adornado de otro alguno, bastarian su constancia, su amor sin limites ni resfriamiento por la libertad de su pais; bastarian su génio infatigable para administrar y allegar medios de sostener la lucha con gloria, su noble desinterés, su probidad y su grandeza de ánimo durante los reveses de que fué víctima; bastaria, en fin, su sana intencion, su respeto hácia el descubridor del Nuevo Mundo y 16 años de no interrumpidos servicios prestados por su patria, que al cabo habia de ultrajarle menospreciando sus servicios y la rectitud de sus sentimientos, para que nuestra pluma no vacilase un solo punto en distinguirle con el glorioso título de héroe, añadido á los que el mismo pueblo venezolano, y á nombre de él sus representantes, le dieron, sin duda con justicia, de Libertador y Padre de la Patria.
