Excerpt from The American Biographical Sketch Book Andrew fuller once remarked that he would rather be like the moon, which, although full of spots and imperfections, lends a useful light to men, than a meteor, with its dazzling but transient glare, exciting only the wonder of mankind. It was in the spirit of this sentiment that we compiled the following pages, embracing brief sketches, for the most part, of the lives of men who, by unwearied perseverance, have triumphed over difficulties. Born in an humble sphere, which precluded the advantages of a liberal education, we resolved, that although unable to write a learned work, we would attempt to produce a useful one. Hence, the fastidious critic who shall search for faults, will be rewarded with an abundant harvest. If, however, this volume shall serve as a hint to those so well able to write a better, a valuable end will have been attained. But, in the absence of such, we flatter ourself that the biographical sketch Boox, with all its defects, will not be entirely unacceptable to a discerning public. The needle, although unpolished, may yet serve to point the way to the pole 5 and if the examples set forth shall cheer but one sufferer, and enable him to wait with patience for the bright dawning of to-morrow, the labor will not have been in vain. Accustomed to hearing readers of taste, and critics of acknowledged acumen, say of many of the prose papers as well as poems that they ought not to be lost sight of, but collected and published in a volume, this was at last resolved upon, and announcements of it made as far back as 1866 3 but from domestic suffering and other causes the issue was delayed. Meanwhile other works of a somewhat similar bearing, by various writers, were published, yet in no way connected with or superseding this, which during the year 1871 was in part issued as a serial, under the title of Morning Studies and Evening Pastimes, with a result suggesting its re-issue in a more complete and solid form 3 and, though again sadly delayed, it is at last sent forth, not without a hope that it may meet with such welcome as will justify its being followed, ere long, by another, touching however on different though kindred themes. The forward cabin was used for the horses and the after cabin for a dining-room and sleeping room. For a long distance the canal runs parallel with the Mohawk river, and is very high, sometimes fifty feet above the river. On this occasion, as we were passing through Little Falls, we were just coming out of a lock, when the towline broke and the horse went down the embankment. It killed the horse and nearly killed me.
