Die vorliegende Arbeit rekonstruiert die Wissenschaftsgeschichte der protestantischen Theologie zwischen 1850 und 1870. Auf breiter Quellenbasis werden vier wichtige Fakultäten dieser Periode in institutionen-, sozial-, mentalitäts- und ideengeschichtlicher Perspektive sowie mit Blick auf den kirchenpolitischen Kontext vergleichend untersucht. Es ergibt sich ein differenziertes Bild der Entwicklung protestantischer Theologie zur modernen Universitätsdisziplin: Überall etablierten sich Seminare als Orte wissenschaftlich anspruchsvoller Lehre; die Laufbahn der Universitätstheologen wurde zunehmend reguliert und professionalisiert; die wissenschaftliche Publizistik intensivierte und spezialisierte sich. Auf Basis einer kollektivbiographischen Analyse aller in Tübingen, Jena, Erlangen und Berlin lehrenden Universitätstheologen (womit zum ersten Mal in einer derartigen Untersuchung die Nichtordinarien einbezogen sind) werden die große Bandbreite der sozialen Verhältnisse der Fakultätsmitglieder sowie die Anfänge eines kompetitiven gesamtdeutschen Universitätssystems der protestantischen Theologie beschrieben.
