Of cleavage is decreased. Thus equal parts Of coelomic ﬂuid and sea-water may cut down the per cent. Of cleavage to zero; higher proportions Of coelomic ﬂuid, 75 to 100 per cent.; invariably permit no fertilization. In practice it was found extremely difficult to use large quanti ties of blood owing to its scarcity. Since, however, eggs from one female only were used in any given experiment, this was found no great difficulty, since the number Oi eggs used was very small in each case. Excerpt from Biological Bulletin of the Marine Biological Laboratory, Vol. 7: June, 1904 to November, 1904 From the behavior of these colloidal solutions under various chemical and electrical conditions Hardy concluded, that the sol phase is maintained under normal conditions because all the colloidal particles carry an electrical charge of the same Sign, and are thus mutually repelled, and remain in a state of fine suspension. Whenever there is introduced an elec trical charge of an opposite sign, either by means of a dissociated electrolyte or by the electrical current, the charge carried by the colloidal particles is neutralized, and fusion or coagulation occurs.
