Meaningful Information written by Anthony Reading and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-16 with Science categories.

The book introduces a radically new way of thinking about information and the important role it plays in living systems. It opens up new avenues for exploring how cells and organisms change and adapt, since the ability to detect and respond to meaningful information is the key that enables them to receive their genetic heritage, regulate their internal milieu, and respond to changes in their environment. It also provides a way of resolving Descartes’ dilemma by explaining the workings of the brain in non-mechanical terms that are not tainted by spiritual or metaphysical beliefs. The types of meaningful information that different species and different cell types are able to detect are finely matched to the ecosystem in which they live, for natural selection has shaped what they need to know to function effectively in those circumstances. Biological detection and response systems range from the chemical configurations that govern genes and cell life to the relatively simple tropisms that guide single-cell organisms, the rudimentary nervous systems of invertebrates, and the complex neuronal structures of mammals and primates. The scope of meaningful information that can be detected and responded to reaches its peak in our own species, as exemplified by our special abilities in language, cognition, emotion, and consciousness, all of which are explored within this new framework.

This new edition in Barron’s Easy Way Series contains everything students need to succeed in biology. Key content review and practice exercises to help students learn biology the easy way. Topics covered in Barron's Biology: The Easy Way include the cell, bacteria and viruses, fungi, plants, invertebrates, chordates, Homo Sapiens, heredity, genetics and biotechnology, evolution, and ecology. Practice questions in each chapter help students develop their skills and gauge their progress. Visual references including charts, graphs, diagrams, instructive illustrations, and icons help engage students and reinforce important concepts. Each chapter in Biology: The Easy Way provides special study aids that are designed to enhance the learning and understanding of biological principles or concepts, including: Self-Test Connection: includes 30 questions or more in three types of short-answer tests (fill-ins, multiple choice, true and false). Answer keys are provided. Word-Study Connection: lists the vocabulary of the chapter that the reader is encouraged to review and learn. Connecting to Concepts: provides open-ended questions to encourage the reader to think about and discuss concepts that appeared in the chapter. Connecting to Life/Job Skills: invites the reader to extend the biology information just learned into the living community through life skills and career information. Learning about careers related to biology expands one’s knowledge of the kinds of opportunities available for education beyond high school and the need for science-trained people in the work force. Also invites the reader to look at the biological events taking place in the local community and to assess the effects of environmental conditions. Chronology of Famous Names in Biology: Scientists representing all countries, races, and religions are included—ranging in time from ancient Greek philosopher-scientists to modern day investigators. For each name, a brief summary of the accomplishment is given, along with the approximate date of the discovery or invention and the country where the work took place.

Information Processing In Biological Systems written by Stephan L. Mintz and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-12-25 with Science categories.

This volume contains the greater part of the papers submitted to the Information Processing in Biology portion of the 1983 Orbis Scientiae, then dedicated to the eightieth year of Professor P.A.M. Dirac. Before the volume could be published, Professor Dirac passed away on October 20, 1984, thereby changing the dedica tion of this volume, and its companion, on High Energy Physics, to his everlasting memory. The last Orbis Scientiae (as it was often in the past) was shared by two frontier fields - in this case by High Energy Physics and Information Processing in Biology, demonstrating the universality of scientific principles and goals. The interaction amongst scientists of diverse interests can only enhance the fruitfulness of their efforts. The editors take pride in the modest contribution of Orbis Scientiae towards this goal. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the typing of these proceedings by Regelio Rodriguez and Helga Billings, and the customary excellent supervision by the latter. The efficient preparation and organiza tion of the conference was due largely to the skill and dedication of Linda Scott. As in the past, Orbis Scientiae 1983 received nominal support from the United States Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.
