Sound preparation design enhances longevity for majority of the restorations. Dentistry has come a long way from an empirical art to a well-developed sophisticated science with a background. This has been made possible with the understanding of biomechanical principles. A prosthesis is a mechanical device which has to be accommodated harmoniously in a biological environment i.e. the oral cavity and the associated structures of the stomatognathic system. A thorough understanding of the biomechanical principles facilitates any treatment. This text is an effort to uplift the scientific basis for fixed prosthodontic therapy and dentistry at large. It will not only help the specialist but also a general dentist to do a fixed prosthodontic procedure with every understanding of the possible outcome. Perspective diagnosis and disciplined tooth preparation following the biomechanical principles can determine the success of a fixed partial denture because abutment teeth have the additional responsibility of supporting a fixed prosthesis over an edentulous space. Reduction of tooth structure is preceded by a mental image of the design of the planned prosthesis and the anticipated occlusion.

Removable Partial Dentures: A Clinician's Guide is a highly practical step-by-step guide to the diagnosis, treatment planning, and manufacture of removable partial prostheses. Through its systematic approach, the book demystifies the clinical practice of these procedures, providing the practitioner with essential information on this common modality for partially edentulous patients. This clinical manual offers easy-to-follow instruction on removable partial dentures, thoroughly outlining this technique in a practical format. Aimed at the new dental professional, Removable Partial Dentures provides key information for general dentists and prosthodontists.

This accessible and well-illustrated text concentrates on the biological and functional principles to be followed in designing partial dentures. This book is written in the context of a developing country and so does not dismiss the acrylic resin-based partial denture as a mere 'temporary appliance', as is so often done in conventional texts. Instead the author emphasises that if the biofunctional principles, as explained here, are applied, excellent prostheses will be the result -- whatever materials are used in their construction.

Authors: Nuno Sampaio, Filipe Moreira, Luis Alves, Fernando Guerra, Pedro Nicolau Improving biomechanics in removable partial dentures with implants. Clinical report -8 years follow-upPoster Presentation Background:tOral rehabilitation of edentulous distal areas with removable partial dentures (RPD) is a demanding clinical challenge. These oral rehabilitations have sometimes muco-dental support due to the absence of teeth in the posterior areas (Kennedy class I - bilateral free end and Kennedy class II -unilateral free end).Oral rehabilitation of such cases (Kennedy classes I and II) with RPD is generally associated with some problems, such as: lack of stability, minimal retention, discomfort when loading, pain on abutment teeth and frequent need of relining. There are several articles supporting that implants in such edentulous spaces are viable and should be an option under certain conditions Aim: tThe purpose of this clinical report is to present 8-years follow-up of a clinical case combining tooth, implants and removable partial denture. Material and Methods:tA 36 year old female patient, with a partially edentulous atrophic maxilla was submitted to a maxillofacial surgery to correct a skeletal class III malocclusion in June 2008 and 1 year after rehabilitated with implants and a RPD at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, Portugal. In order to proceed with the treatment, the patient imposed some conditions: no bone grafting, sinus floor elevation or any kind of tissue graft. She also asked for a fixed rehabilitation at least in the aesthetic zone. Therefore a fixed anterior bridge on implant positions 12-22(FDI) and RPD supported by teeth 13, 23(FDI) and implants in positions 18 and 28 (FDI)tResults:tThis case with 8 years follow-up, had no problems with the implants (biological or technical), and only adverse event was the need to replace the removable partial denture after 2 years because the patient left it abroad when she went on vacations. Conclusions and clinical implications: tAfter reviewing the literature, a RPD supported by implants was the best treatment, regarding all limits imposed by the patient. tThis kind of treatment should be used in oral rehabilitation of Kennedy classes I and II in order to avoid some problems and discomfort during function.

This book shows computational finite element simulations to analyse the strength of implant anchorage for intrasinus and extramaxillary approaches under various occlusal loading locations and directions. Three-dimensional model of the craniofacial area surrounding the region of interest, soft tissue and framework are developed using computed tomography image datasets. The zygomatic and standard dental implants are modeled using a conventional computer-aided design software and placed at the appropriate location. Material properties are assigned appropriately for the cortical, cancellous bones and implants with Masseter forces applied at the zygomatic arch and occlusal loadings applied on the framework surface.
