Metabolomics and Microbiomics: Personalized Medicine from the Fetus to the Adult encompasses the most recent advances on the usage of metabolomics and microbiome research to improve disease diagnosis and healthcare. Medicine is changing from epidemiologic, descriptive, reductionist, and reactive approaches to individualized, predictive, and holistic ones by applying microbiomics to understand the functionality of the human body. The book discusses topics such as systems biology approaches, omics technologies, perinatal programming, and personalized medicine. It also discusses the ethical implications of microbiomics research and new pathways of research, such as renal regenerative medicine, gender medicine in perinatology, and animals and the science of healing. The book is a valuable resource for medical professionals and researchers in metabolomics, nutrition, microbiology, and personalized-predictive medicine. The book also will appeal to non-specialized professionals who may take advantage of its captivating and simple language. Covers the latest scientific discoveries in order to improve health and early diagnosis of diseases Brings a holistic and perinatal programming approach—from fetus to adulthood—to early and long-term prevention of diseases Provides illustrations and diagrams to facilitate understanding for readers Discusses the ethical implications of microbiomics research and new pathways of research, such as renal regenerative medicine, gender medicine in perinatology, and animals and the science of healing

Microplastics In Water And Wastewater written by Hrissi K. Karapanagioti and has been published by IWA Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book covers the topic of microplastics in water and wastewater. The chapters start with introductory issues related to the growing interest in the scientific community on microplastics and the human water cycle and point out where the microplastics could interact with water. The subsequent chapters examine evidence of the microplastic presence in freshwater, such as in both rivers and lakes, in freshwater biota, and hazardous chemicals associated with microplastics in such systems. Another set of chapters discuss the presence of microplastics in wastewater: their sources; their transfer through a wastewater treatment plant; the concentration of microplastics in effluents throughout the world; the plastic biomedia used in wastewater treatment plants and the effect on the surrounding environment of effluent wastewater pipes. These chapters also discuss the sampling methods, the sample treatment and analysis techniques used so far for microplastics in wastewater. Additionally, the presence of microplastics in sewage sludge and in soils irrigated with wastewater or fertilized with sludge are discussed. The possible impact of plastics and their additives on plants, microalgae, and humans are reviewed and presented in a critical way. Finally, a chapter summarizes all the relevant regulations and initiatives that point to the necessity of a global directive for the protection of the environment from plastic and microplastic pollution. The topic of microplastics in freshwater systems and in wastewater has scarcely been studied and requires more attention. Microplastics in Water and Wastewater aims to bring these initial findings to the attention of a broader audience and especially to operators and managers of freshwater and wastewater systems. It will also be helpful to people already aware of the marine debris problem to understand the sources of microplastics in the oceans, from freshwater systems and wastewater treatment plants.

Slime Mould In Arts And Architecture written by Andrew Adamatzky and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The slime mould Physarum polycephalum was a source of explosive growth of bioengineered hybrid sensing and computing devices in the past decade. Being in its vegetative state, the plasmodium, the slime mould configures its protoplasmic network to optimize its geometry with relation to patterns of attractants and repellents. The slime mould’s adaptability, polymorphism and aestheticism inspired artists and architects. The slime mould has been seen as a self-conscious liquid form continuously changing its shape in response to external stimulation and due to interactions of thousands of micro-oscillators in its body. Elusiveness is a magic feature of the slime mould. One moment the slime mould gives you a solution to a mathematical problem by a shape of its body, next moment it changes its shape and the solution ,disappears.Slime Mould in Arts and Architecture presents a set of unique chapters written by leading artists, architects and scientists, which resulted from creative translations of the slime mould behaviour into forms and sounds, unconventional investigations and sensorial experiences and the slime mould ability to remove boundaries between living and artificial, solid and fluid, science and arts. The book gives readers unique tools for designing architectural forms and creative works using the slime mould, understanding how pro-cognitive living substrates can be used in everyday life, it sparks new ideas and initiates further progress in many fields or arts, architecture, science and engineering.
