The effects of medicaments, used in the treatment of arthritic diseases, on the surface tension of the synovial fluid have been measured. The synovial fluid was obtained from the carpal joints of freshly slaughtered 'calves and from knee joints of arthritic patients. Values obtained for the surface tension (~) of the pure liquids were 47. 6 mN/m and 45. 8 mN/m respectively. The surf£ce tensions of the additives and their effect, as a function of concentration, on the surface tension of synovial fluid are shown in figure 2. From this diagram it can be seen that bone and cartilage extract(K u. K-

Organ transplantation has almost disappeared from headlines in the daily press, possibly because it failed to fulfill exaggerated expectations. Transplanta tion pathology has become more and more important, not only with relation to therapeutic transplantations but even more in its fundamental theories. There is some analogy here to the development in space science where spectacular achievements were followed by sobering frustrations and where, for the time being, the effect on technology is more fruitful than the outcome of the original far-reaching projects. That transplant rejection was defined, in most of its stages, as an immunologic process, has given many new impulses to immunology in general. Transplantation assays have become a pet experiment in immunobiology and an abundant source of general information and knowledge. The implications of such a development could not be predicted when the present volume was outlined and planned. In accordance with the concept of WILLI MASSHOFF, general transplantion pathology was given a central position as a fundamental science, while the chapters on the transplantation of various tissues are of a more paradigmatic character. It was MASSHOFF who invited competent authors and who managed to balance their articles, despite some overlapping, so as to draw a comprehensive picture of contemporary transplanta tion pathology. WILLI MASSHOFF died while he was editing the first manuscripts. As co-editors we have undertaken to complete the publication that we began together.

Effects Of Joint Incongruity On Articular Pressure Distribution And Subchondral Bone Remodeling written by F. Eckstein and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

The objective of the present work is to review the existing literature on joint incongruity, cellular mechano-transduction, and computer simulations of mechano-adaptive bone remodelling, and to quantitatively assess the effect of incongruity on load transmission and subchondral mineralisation. Idealised computer models of incongruous joints and a specific anatomically based model of the humero-ulnar joint articulation were analysed with the finite element method, and the results directly compared with experimental and morphological data.

Implantable jOint prostheses which have been under development for more than 25 years, are today being used with success in the rehabilitation of many cases, including patients with extremely severe joint pathology. However, artificial joint designs still pose problems with respect to their function, anchoring, materials employed and the interaction of the prosthesis with the surrounding biological tissues. Some of these problems are associated with considerable therapeutic complications. Further improvement in the artificial joint requires the application of all the modern experimental and research techniques and the close cooperation of medical doctors, engineers and scientists. The International Symposium on Advances in Artificial Hip and Knee Joint Technology held at Erlangen on October 30 and 31, 1975 under the auspices of the Societas Physica Medica Erlangensis, had as its aim the promotion of just this interdisciplinary cooperation. One of the traditional objectives of the Societas has been the advancement of diagnosis and therapy by the adaptation of medical skill to modern technology and scientific engineering concepts. The major objective of this volume is to present, in expanded form, the lectures given by internationally recognized scientists and clinical researchers in the field of artificial joints in the locomotor system, and to make that information available to a wider public. The experience discussed covers the principles and primary methods of joint replacement.

Dr. MAQUET, the foremost disciple of Professor PAUWELS' and the orthopae dic heir to the PAUWELS' concepts of osteotomy of the hip for arthritis, has assembled in this one book the strongest and most lucid contemporary statement of the principles and practice of this very important school of hip surgery. Professor PAUWELS' contributions to the understanding of the biomechanics of the hip and to the concepts and execution of osteotomy of the hip for arthritis are outstanding and timeless. With clarity, Dr. MAQUET articulates this position and refines it further in the light of his own investiga tion. While other investigators, of course, differ on individual concepts or princi ples in this book or disagree with specific positions, assumptions, or conclu sions, it is clear to all that this book is a benchmark work. Dr. MAQUET, as Professor PAUWELS always did, illustrates his text lavishly with beautiful examples of individual cases illuminating the principles ad vanced. But in addition, he has gone further and presents long-term follow-up data, quantifying the results of these surgical precepts as experienced in his own practice. It is a work that has been long sought and is richly received. Boston, Massachusetts, 1984 WILLIAM H. HARRIS, M.D.

As recently as 20 years ago, ceramics were widely ignored as potential biomaterials. Interest in bioceramics has increased dramatically over the past decade to the point where it is anticipated they will be the materials of choice for many orthopedic, otologic, maxillofacial and dental applications during the decade of the '90s. Alumina ceramics are being used extensively as articulating comJ1onents in total joint prostheses because of Ithe materials low coefficient of friction and excellent wear resistances. Alumina ceramics are also being used in dental and maxillofacial applica tions because of the materials excellent biocompatibility. Because of its ability to chemically bond to bone, hydroxyapatite is rapidly becoming the material of choice for many dental and maxillofacial applications. For the past decade, one of the most widely researched topics in the field of orthopedics has been the clinical evaluation of joint prostheses based upon stabili zation via tissue ingrowth. It appears that the next generation of joint prostheses will be based upon direct chemically bonding to bone using hydroxyapatite, surface-active glass or surface-active glass ceramics coatings. Resorbable bioceramics are limited to temporary bone space fillers, periodontal pockets treatment and resorbable pharma ceutical delivery systems. Bioceramics is a comprehensive reference textbook covering the history of bio ceramics, present status of bioceramics, and prediction for future use of bioceramics. This book will serve as a major reference for students, as well as experienced bio material researchers. The book presents the state-of-the-art of bioceramics as of 1991.

International Review Of Connective Tissue Research written by David A. Hall and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-22 with Medical categories.

International Review of Connective Tissue Research, Volume 8, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in connective tissue research. The details of the structure of collagen and its biosynthesis are now well established, and attention has focused on the finer details of the biochemical mechanisms involved. The knowledge achieved so far is also being applied to studies of various physiological, developmental, and pathological mechanisms involving the connective tissues. These trends are reflected in the subject covered by this volume. The enzymes involved in the posttranslation modifications of collagen are being intensively investigated. The book deals with three of these: lysyl oxidase, the enzyme involved in the first stage of cross-link formation; and the two glycosyl transferases involved in the glycosylation of hydroxylysome residues. New collagen types are reviewed together with recent work on collagen messenger RNA. Both of these topics are important to the understanding of the control of collagen biosynthesis. The involvement of connective tissues in physiological and pathological processes is discussed in three areas. These are interaction of collagen with platelets in hemostasis; the biosynthesis of connective tissue components by smooth muscle cells; and biochemical research on the intervertebral disc, the disease of which is behind the majority of back pain problems.

Arthritis written by H. Deicher and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a common disease, an estimated 1. 5% of the population being under medical treatment for it in European countries and elsewhere. However, to date the origin of this chronic inflammatory disorder has not been elucidated. Evidence for the involvement of microbial agents is still tenuous, the rea son for the defective control of inflammation is still unknown, and the disease all too of ten progresses to crippling stages despite long-term treatment. As T. McKeown recently stated with regard to rheumatoid arthritis, "not enough is even known to indicate which is the more promising approach, and the pru dent course is to investigate both origins and mechanisms". While working on animal model diseases as well as on aspects of rheumatoid arthritis and related disorders in man, the members of the Special Research Area on patho physiology of rheumatoid inflammation in man and. animals (Sonderforschungsbereich 54 "Pa thomechanismen der rheumatoiden Entztindung bei Mensch und Tier"; maintained by the Deut sche Forschungsgemeinschaft) at the Veterinary and Medical Schools, Hannover, have been guided by the concept that by studying clinically and morphologically similar diseases in several species, mutually stimulating results might lead to improved knowledge of the pathophysio logy of rheumatoid arthritis. In particular, from working with model diseases in animals new approaches to the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis might be derived, while detailed knowledge of pathogenetic processes in rheu matoid arthritis could further research in chronic stages of pertinent animal diseases
