Biotechnology for Treatment of Wastes Containing Metals addresses various aspects related to different wastes that have a metallic content and represent a serious risk for the environment and human health. These wastes, due to their physical and chemical characteristics, have been the object of studies which have led to the development of different technologies in recycling, reuse or adequate disposal, biotechnology being one of these alternatives. Biotechnology offers a range of options for the treatment of types of waste using microorganisms, biomass and their by-products. The mechanisms involved in these waste treatment processes are diverse and complex, and its optimization and efficiency is multifactorial. This text contains nine chapters related to the problem of the metal contamination in the environment as well as some of the different biotechnological alternatives that have been applied for the reduction and/or recovery of metal contamination.

This new millennium belongs to biotechnology. Rapid progress is being made in minerals processing based on biological principles. Microorganisms can play a beneficial role in all facets of minerals processing, from mining to waste disposal and management. Biohydrometallurgical extraction of metals from a wide variety of ores is being commercially practiced all over the world--in Canada, the United States, Russia, South America, Australia, and Europe. Mineral Biotechnology: Microbial Aspects of Mineral Beneficiation, Metal Extraction, and Environmental Control provides the technical knowledge necessary to compete in this arena by presenting specific, detailed technologies and real world case studies. The interactions among biotechnology, metals, and minerals are relevant to a number of emerging interdisciplinary areas such as biogenesis and biomineralization; biomaterials processing and biomimetics; ceramics and biomedical engineering; biomineral beneficiation; bioleaching; biocorrosion, biofouling, and biodeterioration; and bioenvironmental control.

Biomining written by Douglas E. Rawlings and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-09 with Science categories.

Biomining is the use of microorganisms in the recovery of metals from ores. During bioleaching, metals such as copper, nickel or zinc are oxidized through microbial action from the water-insoluble sulfide to the soluble sulfate forms. Although gold is inert to microbial action, microbes can also be used in gold recovery from certain types of ores because as they oxidize the ore, they open up its structure, thereby allowing a gold-solubilizing agent such as cyanide to penetrate the ore. The book describes several industrial bioleaching and biooxidation processes as well as the underlying theory and biology of the microbes involved.

Cell Biology Of Metals And Nutrients written by Rüdiger Hell and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-10 with Science categories.

Plants are composed of 17 essential and at least 5 beneficial elements, and these must be taken up as metal or nutrient ions to allow for growth and cell division. Much effort has been devoted to studying the physiology and biochemistry of metals and nutrients in plants. The aspect of cell biology, however, is an emerging new field and much needs to be learned about sensing, long-distance communication within plants, and cellular signal transduction chains in response to environmental stress. Cellular malfunction and consequently disease result when any of the key steps in metal and nutrient homeostasis are disrupted. Working together, leading experts in their respective fields provide a new concept that reaches beyond plant nutrition and plasmalemma transport into cellular physiology. Each chapter contains basic information on uptake, physiological function, deficiency and toxicity syndromes, long-distance and intracellular transport. The discussion is devoted to metals and nutrients where recent progress has been made and highlights the aspects of homeostasis and sensing, signaling and regulation, drawing parallels to other organisms including humans. Finally, the book identifies gaps in our current knowledge and lays out future research directions.
