Biotic homogenization is the global trend of increasing similarity between biotic communities in different locations, resulting in a loss of regional distinctiveness and potentially of biotic diversity. This study focused on the ecology of vacant lots in Northeast Ohio, an important component of greenspace in shrinking cities. This study aimed to investigate whether vacant lot plant and soil microbial communities are more homogenized with increasing intensity of urbanization, a potential driver of biotic homogenization. Two different systems were used to categorize levels of urbanization. The first method was based on the location of sites within the urban landscape and the surrounding land uses. I asked if the plant, soil bacteria, and soil fungal communities differed between vacant lots found in these three categories of urbanization, using surveys of standing vegetation and molecular analysis of soil samples collected from each site. The second method used average impervious surface coverage to quantitatively create categories of urbanization intensity. In this field study, I investigated whether homogenization occurred in the vegetation community between vacant lots based on sites selected in three levels of urbanization by surveying the standing plant community. Together these complementary methods of categorizing urbanization can investigate patterns in diversity in urban vacant lots to determine if homogenization is occurring when considering urbanization on a broad scale, looking at the indirect effects of urban land uses, or when considering more local differences in urbanization intensity. Different patterns in community diversity were observed between these two approaches and also between different taxa. Urbanization level was associated with an increase in alpha diversity for fungal communities, while alpha diversity decreased for plant communities. Species turnover (beta diversity) decreased with urbanization level for fungal communities. However, in plant communities, lower species turnover was observed in suburban than in urban sites. No significant differences between plant community alpha or beta diversity were found with urbanization intensity. More studies investigating vacant lot plant and soil microbial community diversity with urbanization at differing scales are needed to understand the impacts of these land uses and to help minimize the ecological impacts of anthropogenic activities.

Human land use has variable effects on ecological communities at local and landscape scales, but these effects cumulate in clear trends of species loss and decline at larger continental scales. Linking changes in biodiversity across scales is therefore a major research challenge for global change ecologists. In a worst-case scenario known as biotic homogenization, anthropogenic changes such as land use drive the replacement of sensitive endemic species by widespread, disturbance-adapted species, leading to potentially little change in species diversity at small scales, but driving loss of diversity at larger scales as historically distinct communities become compositionally similar. This dissertation explores the role of land use in driving biotic homogenization and other forms of biodiversity change across spatial scales, using bee pollinators collected from a large-scale study design including forest, agriculture, and urban landscapes replicated across four distinct vegetation zones of the northeastern U.S.I used this dataset to ask (1) Do anthropogenic landscapes alter alpha diversity and composition of bee communities, and (2) Are anthropogenic landscapes homogenizing bee communities across regional spatial scales? I used a literature review focused specifically on the role of urban land use, to ask (3) how do urban drivers affect the interactions between plants and pollinators, including bees? Relative to natural forest habitat, bee communities in agriculture and urban landscapes were less diverse, had fewer rare species, and were dominated by species with long flight seasons and social behavior. These changes in species composition did not result in detectable homogenization of species composition across anthropogenic versus natural landscapes. However, bee communities in anthropogenic landscapes were more closely related to one another, both within and across sites, indicating that land use is associated with a loss of phylogenetic diversity at small and large spatial scales. The literature review identified habitat fragmentation, invasive species, urban warming, and pollution as key drivers of change in bee communities and plant-pollinator interactions in urban landscapes. Overall, negative effects of land use on bee biodiversity were subtle and often masked by more dramatic changes bee community composition. This indicates both current resiliency and a potential for large-scale biodiversity loss and decline in the context of continued land use change.

Influenced by the interplay of global climate change and urbanization, urban plants becoming increasingly homogenized in China. However, regional effects of biotic homogenization cannot be clearly explained due to the lack of continuous large-scale. Thus, we explored the characteristics and regional effects of biotic homogenization, not only contributes to the improvement of urban biodiversity, but also has important value for human well-being. Here, we analyzed the woody plants of 101 cities in 8 major urban agglomerations in China. The diversity patterns and influencing factors were explored using generalized additive, geographically weighted regression, and structural equation models. The main results were as follows. (1) The homogenization of woody plants in northern China was more serious, indicated a common problem of single application of urban greening species. (2) Geographical, climatic, and human factors all have an impact on the regional effect of biotic homogenization. (3) Affected significantly by latitude, plentiful natural species offer more options for boosting the diversity of urban greening plants. Finally, we suggested that urban biodiversity management should be considered specific regional environmental, both to meet the needs of residents. Increasing the scientific application of native species as well as providing adequate water conditions, will help alleviate the homogenization of woody plants.
