Excerpt from Bird Portraits After a severe Winter, While snow and ice still remind us Of the past, the Song Sparrow, mounting to the top of some bush or small tree, repeats his cheerful tinkling song, helping, as Thoreau says, to crack the ice in the ponds. Few people are so unobserv ant as not to notice this bright strain, after the silence Of Winter. A peculiarity Of the song is the amount Of variation shown by different individuals and Often by the same bird. At almost regular distances along the bushy roadside, or over the hedge-intersected fields, one will meet on the early Spring mornings one Song Sparrow after another, each restricted to his part Of the road or field. If one notices the songs Of each, it is evident that, though the songs have the same general character, there are almost as many ways of beginning a strain as there are singers. Moreover, the same bird has been Observed to alter his song in a short space of time to two or three different variations. Probably, if one's ear were acute enough, all birds Of one species would be found to sing With slight differences, but few show in so marked a degree as the Song Sparrow the tendency to variation Which characterizes a species. Excerpt from Portraits and Habits of Our Birds, Vol. 2 IT IS a fact well known to field naturalists that in the heavily forested lands of North America comparatively few birds are to be seen. The conditions of life are such that ordinarily far more are found where a portion of the land is under cultivation. The diversified crops, weeds, plants, fruit-bearing shrubs and trees, with their attendant hoards of insects found in and about culti vated regions all tend to make more favorable living conditions for wild birds. In sections, therefore, where open fields are inter spersed with thickets, grown-up fence rows, orchards and small areas of woodlands, and the country traversed with streams, one will generally find bird life more abundant. Then, too, in the set tlements men have destroyed many of the smaller animals and snakes that prey upon birds. Any species of wild life provided with abundant food and insured against an excessive loss from the depredations of its enemies will increase in numbers. Undoubtedly the farm-land birds of North America have greatly increased since the discovery and settlement of the continent. Only those that could be, and have been, commercialized have sufiered particularly from the hands of man. Passenger Pigeons are extinct because they were shot, trapped and netted to extermina tion for food and for sport. Many game birds have been threat ened with a like fate. Egrets and some other so-called birds of plumage, are rare today because of past demands for their feathers by the millinery trade. Despite the fact that numerous species have largely increased over their former numbers there is yet the greatest need for their still further increase. Our rapidly growing agricultural interests have resulted in vastly enlarging the varieties and numbers of injurious insects that prey upon the growing crop and the harvested products. The National Association of Audubon Societies is intensely inter ested in this phase of conservation and wishes to use every legitimate means of bringing the subject of protecting our economically valu able birds again and again to the attention of the public. This book, being Volume II of the series which it is hoped to continue, is being brought out and offered at cost in the hope that it will further stimulate interest in American bird protection. Excerpt from The Natural History of Game-Birds: Illustrated by Thirty-One Plates, Coloured; With Memoir and Portrait of Sir T. Stamford Raffles This very close application to business and study, however, excited symptoms Of disease in a frame and constitution never very robust, and alarmed his friends for his health. Relaxation was recommend ed, and he employed a short leave of absence, by making a pedestrian excursion through Wales, which. While it gave him renewed strength, gave him also information of the mining districts, which was after wards of advantage to his researches in Java. It would scarcely have been expected that a young man, placed in so apparently friendless a situation, should have made to himself patrons. A friend had, however, marked him and upon the occurrence of a vacancy in the establishment of the East India House. Excerpt from In Time of Swallows: 52 American Birds Usually introductions are written to point out to readers the merits of the work they are about to read. Often, however, the merits are more obvious in themselves than they appear in dis cussion. In reading one of these poems you will see a living bird flashing before your eyes among green leaves, hopping delicately on a lawn, or looking out warily from a secret nest - you will hear his call or song and feel you know him intimately. What could I add to this? Only that I am proud to have had something to do with the making of this book. I chose many of these poems for The Washington Post while I was its poetry editor; I encouraged Mae Winkler Goodman to expand a group of a few bird portraits to the considerable series you see here; and then suggested she secure an illustrator and make a book of it. I had not dreamed, I admit, that she would find such an illustrator as William Scheele, at once an ornithologist of distinction and an artist - able, without compromise, to combine scientific accuracy with the intangibles of omission and suggestion and atmosphere that make a picture not merely exact, but real and living. Excerpt from Bird-Lore, Vol. 24: January February, 1922 HE form of a bird at rest is so definite, its lines so simple and continuous, rthat one might imagine they could be reproduced by anyone with even slight talent for drawing. Nevertheless, good bird artists are rare. Possibly the very simplicity of the bird's outline makes it a difficult subject, for although each species possesses its own characteristics of form, pose, and expression, which to the bird student are pronounced and Obvious, they are not evident to the artist who has not sufficient interest in bird-life to study his subject sympathetically. How many otherwise excellent paintings are marred by the introduction of the figures of birds as anatomically incorrect as would be a human figure drawn with arms, let us say, attached to the hips instead of to the shoulders! No artist would attempt to draw a man without having previously studied the original; why, therefore, should he hope for success in bird portraiture when he relies on his imagination rather than on nature for a model? It requires, however, something more than study from life to produce a wholly adequate bird picture, just as it requires something in addition to good draftsmanship to paint the portrait of a human subject. Where, on the one hand, there is needed that sympathetic insight into human nature which per mits of character interpretation, so, on the other, there is need for that love of birds which sees not merely a feathered form but a.creature marvelously endowed with its own special traits, disposition, and potentialities, which are evident only to one who is familiar with what we call the habits Of his subject. It is clear, for example, that one should not depict a Dove with the expression of a Hawk, but only the bird student knows the difference in expression, physiognomy, and attitude between a Warbler and a Vireo. Without going further it may be said, in a word, that no one has ever reached or ever will reach the first rank of bird artists who is not possessed of that keen interest in birds which marks the horn ornithologist.
