Excerpt from Bird Guide: Water Birds, Game Birds and Birds of Prey East of the Rockies While strolling through a piece of woodland, or perhaps along the marsh or seashore, we see a bird, a strange bird, - one we never saw before. Instantly, our curiosity is aroused, and the question arises, What is it? There is the bird! How can we find out whatkind it is? The Ornithologist'of a few years ago had but one course open to him, that is to shoot the bird, take it home, then pore through pages of descriptions until one was found to correspond withthe specimen. Obviously, such methods cannot be pursued today, both humane and economical reasons prohibiting. We have but one alternative left us: We must make copious notes of all the peculiarities and markings of the bird that is be? Fore us. On our return home, we get down our bird books, and there are many excellent ones. After carefully lookingv'through the whole library, we find that, although many of our books are well illustrated none of them have the picture of what we seek, so we adopt the tactics of the Old time Ornithologist, before mentioned, and pore over pages of text, until finally we know what our bird was. It is for just such emergencies as this - to identify a bird when you see it, and where you see it, that this little pocket Bird Guide is prepared. May it be the medium for saving many of today' s seekers for bird truths, from the many trials and tribulations willingly encountered, and hard and thorny roads gladly traveled by the author in his quest for knowledge of bird ways. Excerpt from Bird Guide, Vol. 2: Land Birds East of the Rockies, From Parrots to Bluebirds It is an undisputed fact that a great many of our birds are becoming more scarce each year, while a few are, even now, on the ver of extinction. The decrease in numbers of a few species may be attributed chie y to the elements. Suoh as a long continued period of cold weather or ice stoma in the winter, and rainy weather dur ing the nesting season' however, in one way or another, and often unwittingly, man is chleny responsible or the diminution in numbers. If I were to name the forces that work 'nst the increase of bird life, in order of their importance, I should give them as an; the elements; accidents; cats; other animals; birds of prey; and snakes. I do not take into consideration the death of bitds from natural causes, such as old age and disease, for these should be counterbalanced by the natural increase. Excerpt from A History of the Birds of Colorado West of the lo5th meridian, and rising with extra ordinary abruptness from the plains to the east, the Rocky Mountains occupy roughly the middle third of the State. In a very general way the system forms two parallel ranges running north and south, joined by subsidiary east and west connections; between these are the great mountain parks, open Wide valleys rather bare of trees, and situated at elevations of to feet. The chief of these are North and South Parks, drained by the North and South Platte rivers, which meet out in the plains of Nebraska and join the Missouri near Omaha Middle Park, drained by the Grand River, the principal af uent of the Colorado River of the west, draining into the Gulf of California; and the San Luis Valley, draining into the Rio Grande on the south.
