A stiff upper lip, steely eyes and a cold heart is often how the English imperialist is pictured in popular imagination. Drawing from memoirs, commentaries and family letters, Elizabeth Hamilton brings forth an alternative portrayal of her ancestors, Sir Robert Hamilton and Sir William Barton. Their careers in India are set against the momentous events of their times to present a different side of the colonialists of a quiet people, dedicated to the tradition of upholding the law and avoiding conflict. Volume I, The Proud Empire, traces the life of Sir Robert Hamilton, from the beginning of his career under the watchful eye of his father, up until his retirement. Occupying multiple roles such as the Resident of Indore and Agent to the Governor General in the Central Provinces, he is seen interacting with various prominent Indian figures such as the Rani of Jhansi, Tantya Tope and Nana Sahib. The picture of the arrogant imperialist fades away to be replaced by that of someone keen to make a difference to the society he was working in, who encourages good governance, mends ties in the midst of escalating tensions and must recover cities occupied by insurgents, all the while shadowed by the burden of great personal losses. Volume II, The Straight Race, tracks Sir William Barton’s career in the early twentieth century. Starting in the Punjab and the North-West Frontier, he later served as Resident in the well-administered states of Mysore and Hyderabad, where he stood up to the Nizam, doing his best to set the administration on a less corrupt footing. Retirement did not deter Sir William’s close interest in Indian affairs; he returned twice on tour as an advisor to electrical companies and travelled with a Ministry of Supply mission during the Second World War. With three books and many articles for newspapers and journals on the subject, India remained an integral part of his life.

The Business Of Reflection written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The Business of Reflection: Hawthorne in His Notebooks is a scholarly, annotated selection of Nathaniel Hawthorne's American Notebooks, English Notebooks, and French and Italian Notebooks culled from the authoritative Centenary Edition of the Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne (The Ohio State University Press, 23 volumes) and intended both for students and teachers of American literature and for general readers. The American Notebooks (1835-53) cover the period of most of Hawthorne's published writing and are crucial background for the genesis of his fiction, for his psychological and vocational development, for his marriage to Sophia Peabody, and for his relationships with contemporaries such as Emerson, Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller. The English Notebooks (1853-60) record his experiences and impressions during his residence in England, among them his incisive and influential sketch of Herman Melville. The French and Italian Notebooks (1858-59) are a sourcebook for Hawthorne's last published romance, The Marble Faun and, as Henry James observed, for his deeply ambivalent response to the aesthetic and historical legacy of European civilization. Taken together, Hawthorne's notebooks are essential materials for studying Hawthorne as a writer and a man. They present him at his most candid, intimate, and robust--a many-sided figure who complements and revises the persona known from his published writings, often in unexpected ways.

Anasuya's father--a notorious financier and arms dealer--has disappeared. Has he been kidnapped--or murdered--or just plain dropped out of sight? His daughter claims a complete lack of interest in her father's fate. But why is she hiding on a Greek island with her mother's second husband (now her own lover), and writing obsessively in her notebooks about her father and the other members of her family? Slowly her diary starts to make sense of the disappearance--or, at least it appears to. But all is not what it seems, and Anasuya may not be the most reliable of witnesses. As much a study of strange family interactions as it is a thriller, THE BOMB-MONGER'S DAUGHTER is absolutely compulsive reading. As Mary Lord has said: "[This] is an exceptionally well-written and -crafted [novel] for intelligent readers who enjoy a good story just for the hell of it."
