Bitna decide di farsi avanti e accetta la proposta di “lavoro”: riesce così a lasciare la casa della zia e ad affittare una stanza, per quanto misera, nel sottoscala di un brutto palazzo di periferia; a lei in realtà sembra una reggia. La vecchia signora si fa chiamare Salomé, è immobilizzata e non vuole sentire niente – neanche una parola prima o dopo – che riguardi la realtà: solo favole. Nel frattempo Bitna inizia una strana amicizia con il proprietario della libreria, il signor Pak. I due passano sempre più tempo insieme, escono, parlano, fanno lunghe passeggiate. Ma Bitna si vergogna all’idea di raccontargli la verità sulle sue povere origini e così, anche con lui, inizia a inventare nuove storie.
