World-wide in scope and focusing on the second half of the 20th century, this work provides biographies and discographies of some 500 composers and conductors of light and popular orchestral music, including film, show, theatre and mood music. The book is arranged in two sequences: 1) Biographies and select discographies, both arranged alphabetically, of the well-known and better-known conductors and composers. These entries also include a list of suggested reading for those wishing to further their studies; and 2) Select discographies of conductors about whom little or no biographical information is available. The bibliography at the end of the book covers discographical sources, popular music and film music. This is the first time that the lives and recordings of such artists as Kostelanetz, Faith, and Gould as well as the orchestral recordings of such great popular composers as Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Rodgers, Berlin and Coward have been documented and presented in an encyclopedic form.

The first in a projected series of idiom-specific bibliographies in black music, this work treats classical music. It is a comprehensive index to newspaper and periodical indexes, biographical dictionaries, bibliographies, dissertations and theses, music collections, and published discographies. . . . Scholars, researchers, students, and reference librarians will find that this guide makes searching easier; bibliographers will welcome its detailed and helpful bibliographies. . . . A very fine addition for all music and academic libraries. Choice This comprehensive guide is the first to cover the full range of black activity in classical music, with more than 4,000 references to over 300 performers and ensembles. Compiler John Gray has organized a wealth of resources spanning from the mid-eighteenth century to the present, and ranging geographically from Europe and Africa to the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Containing sections on composers, conductors, individual instrumentalists, symphony orchestras, opera singers and companies, the work builds on earlier research in this long-neglected subject, and brings the black musical legacy to new levels of prominence and accessibility.

This project stemmed from one of the lectures I presented to my "Music Appreciation classes" taught at Florida Memorial University in Miami; students were often curious about why they do not see many Black conductors leading Classical orchestras or jazz. And they would ask me the question. So, I began trying to explain to them the global makeup of classism that exists culturally and its dangers to humanity, especially when the human is purposely omitted or simply ignored. I did my best. Therefore, at this junction as a teacher, I compiled my notes and brief life experiences for this platform about Classical Conductors and Underrepresented Allies. Conductors are the directors' designated guides to music ensembles, such as orchestras, choruses, and recording sessions. Their job is to make logical selections of works studied for historical accuracy, making the necessary adjustment, quality, and relevancy, and knowing the parts of each instrument and voice to ensure accuracy, tempo, blending, phrasing, and breathing with constant eye contact throughout a composition. They are under continuous study for forthcoming performances. In addition, they plan for rehearsals and the concert season and prepare for auditions and extras for the organization.

The Cambridge Companion To The African American Slave Narrative written by Audrey Fisch and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-05-31 with Literary Criticism categories.

The slave narrative has become a crucial genre within African American literary studies and an invaluable record of the experience and history of slavery in the United States. This Companion examines the slave narrative's relation to British and American abolitionism, Anglo-American literary traditions such as autobiography and sentimental literature, and the larger African American literary tradition. Special attention is paid to leading exponents of the genre such as Olaudah Equiano, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs, as well as many other, less well known examples. Further essays explore the rediscovery of the slave narrative and its subsequent critical reception, as well as the uses to which the genre is put by modern authors such as Toni Morrison. With its chronology and guide to further reading, the Companion provides both an easy entry point for students new to the subject and comprehensive coverage and original insights for scholars in the field.
