Black Female Perspectives from Predominantly White Institutions: Strategies for Wellbeing in White Spaces and Beyond supports Black women working in predominantly White spaces and further educates their institutions, non-Black counterparts, students, and families in developing an understanding of the challenges and needs of Black women professionals. In the face of world challenges, the authors contend that anti-Blackness continues to be an infectious pandemic that is devastating Black lives around the globe. Black women professionals, who are often at the forefront of racial and gender justice movements at their institutions, have been especially burdened. Such devotion is daunting and often drains the wellbeing of Black women. Institutions frequently ignore the cry of racial battle fatigue that Black employees, and members of communities of color, are experiencing on a large scale. This has become a serious health risk for many Black people, particularly Black women professionals. The authors assert that it is important to use “for us by us” concepts when addressing racial battle fatigue. Therefore, this book is framed using several African descent-centered knowledge systems. It offers strategies to enhance the wellbeing of Black women, such as ancestral wisdom, addressing anti-Blackness, identities and female life cycles, and planting seeds grounded in love. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences that Black women encountered while enrolled in doctoral programs at predominantly White institutions (PWIs), specifically in terms of race, invisibility, and self-censorship. Three research questions guided this study, providing a closer look at the unique lived experiences encountered in pursuit of doctoral degrees at PWIs. For years, Black women described feeling like outsiders in their academic programs (Collins, 2004; Hunn, 2014; Patterson-Stephens, Lane, & Vital, 2017; Wilder, Jones, & Osborne-Lampkin, 2013). In feeling like an outsider at PWIs, Black female students may find that assimilation and adherence to White institutional norms and aborting their viewpoints (Collins, 2015; Crocco & Waite, 2007) is a way of life. Therefore, it is imperative that the academy acknowledges that Black women attending PWIs experience additional unique challenges other populations simply do not. This qualitative study also sought to fill various gaps in the literature concerning Black females in doctoral programs at PWIs. My research process was phenomenologically based. Martin Heidegger (1970) argued that the objective of phenomenology should be hermeneutical (i.e., researchers should focus more on the interpretation of the experience, creating meaning, and shedding light on various parts of the experience that may have been ignored). Knowing that phenomenological research aims to contextualize lived experiences, I sought to gather a hermeneutical understanding (one's understanding of each individual part) of the experience as well. The study was conducted through a semi-structured interview with 11 Black female doctoral students enrolled at a PWI. Black feminist thought was used as a framework because it allowed the experiences and understanding of Black women to be told by them and from their standpoint, instead of a story told about them through the eyes of others. The results of the study yielded three themes: emotional rollercoaster, it is what it is, and using silence to refute stereotypes. Through the voices of the study participants, their experiences provide a collective perspective for the need to examine current institutional structure, programs, and resources for Black female doctoral students, even though these women embodied substantial resilience and tenacity.

Author's abstract: This study explores the educational experiences of Black girls who attended a predominantly White school in Southeast Georgia from the perspective of a Black female administrator. Using Critical Race Theory (e.g. Bell, 1987, 1992, 1995; Delgado & Stefancic, 2001; Solorzano & Yosso, 2001) and Black Feminist Thought (e.g. Hill Collins, 2000; hooks, 1984/2000) as theoretical frameworks and memoir (Angelou, 1969/2009; Hurston, 1996) and fiction (Bell, 1992; Morrison, 1970/1993) as methodology, I explore ways in which Black girls are oppressed when they attend majority White public schools. Six meanings emerged from this inquiry: (1) Writing my memoir has allowed me to critically look at my past and recognize that my experiences have affected many aspects of my life including my job as an educator. (2) CRT and BFT allows me to use my counterstory to challenge a dominant perspective held about schools. (3) Black Feminist Thought affirms that like other Black, women educators (collectively) experience oppression when they are silenced by their positions, yet also they have a desire to advocate against the subordination of themselves and students (Hill Collins, 2000). (4) BFTT asserts that historically, there are commonalities among the struggles of Black women (Hill Collins, 2000). (5)BFT connects the public schooling of experiences Black girls with the larger issues of the criminalization of Black girls and the school to prison pipeline. (6) Like many others, I am guilty of perpetuating the marginalization of Black students before I gained an awareness of the nature of public school for Black girls.

The purpose of this case study was to explore and gain an in-depth understanding of the personal, professional, and sociocultural experiences of Black female administrators in predominantly White schools and districts. These schools and districts were identified according to their population demographics, with White schools and districts being those in which more than 50% of the student body and staff identify with the United States Census Bureau's term White, non-Hispanic. This qualitative study employed a case study design in order to enable the researcher to investigate and gather data through open-ended, face-to-face, 1-hour interviews with study participants. The two main theoretical frameworks utilized for this qualitative study were critical race theory and Black feminist thought. Study participants were Black female administrators serving as assistant principals, principals, and central office administrators from predominantly White schools and districts in the state of Connecticut in the northeast region of the United States. This case study found that, while it is not impossible for Black female educational leaders to have positive experiences in predominantly White schools and districts, the study shows that these Black female administrators have developed cultural fluency and coping strategies that help them overcome negative effects of being double minorities in the workplace. Having no prior experiences with and knowledge of the dynamics of predominantly White schools and districts, Black female leaders may find themselves feeling lost and alone, or culture-shocked when first exposed to the new environment. Exploring the experiences of these leaders and examining these settings from a critical race theory and Black feminist theory perspective provides greater insight into this underrepresented population. The findings regarding the lived personal, professional, and sociocultural experiences of Black female administrators in predominantly White schools and districts may be useful for educational researchers and practitioners, colleges and universities, boards of education, school districts, schools, and all Black females who aspire to become educational leaders within predominantly White schools and districts. In addition, the findings may be valuable for understanding racial relations and the impact of Black female leaders on predominantly White educators and students, and for professional development planning and educational leadership programs.

This book addresses the interlocking systems of race and gender in institutions of higher education in America. The study is based on empirical data from African American women of various disciplines in faculty and administrative positions at traditionally white colleges and universities. It focuses primarily on narratives of the women in terms of how they are affected by racism, as well as sexism as they perform their duties in their academic environments. The findings suggest that a common thread exists relative to the experiences of the women. The book challenges and dispels the myth that Black progress has led to equality for African American women in the academy. The results of this study make it even more critical that the voices of African American women be heard and their experiences in the academy be expressed. This may be one way to inform academic and lay readers that racism and sexism are not dead.
