Hearts and Minds Without Fear: Unmasking the Sacred in Teacher Preparation is the first book of its kind that focuses on the critical urgency of integrating creativity, mindfulness, and compassion in which social and ecological justice are forefronted in teacher preparation. This is especially significant at a time of cultural turmoil, educational reform, and inequities in public education. The book serves as a vehicle to unmask fear within current educational ethical deficiencies and revitalize hope for community members, teacher educators, pre-service, in-service teachers, and families in school communities. The recipients of these strategies are explicitly presented in order to build understanding of a compassionate paradigm shift in schools that envisions possibility and social imagination on behalf of our children in schools and our communities. The authors unabashedly place the arts and aesthetics at the core of the educational paradigm solution. The book lives its own message. Within each seed chapter, the authors practice authentically what they preach, offering a refreshing perspective to bring our schools back to life and instill hope in children’s and educators’ hearts and minds.

"To be a Black writer in the early years of the Cold War was to face a stark predicament. On the one hand, revolutionary Communism promised egalitarianism and lit the sparks of anticolonial struggle, but was hostile to conceptions of personal freedom. On the other hand, the great force opposing the Soviets at midcentury was itself the very fountainhead of racial prejudice, represented in the United States by Jim Crow. Jesse McCarthy argues that Black writers of this time were equally alienated from the left and the right and channeled that alienation into remarkable experiments in literary form. Embracing racial affect and interiority, they forged an aesthetic resistance premised on fierce dissent from both US racial liberalism and Soviet Communism. Ranging from the end of World War II to the rise of Black Power in the 1960s, from Richard Wright and James Baldwin to Gwendolyn Brooks and Paule Marshall and others, Jesse McCarthy shows how Black writers defined a distinctive moment in American literary culture that McCarthy calls "the Blue Period.""--

Semi-arid regions are ecological security barriers that prevent arid regions from expanding and turning into deserts. The expansion of arid regions and desertification seriously threaten ecological security, and human society cannot achieve sustainable development in an insecure ecological environment. As the transitional zone between arid and humid regions, semi-arid regions lay the foundation of ecological safety for the development of human society. This book provides an overview of processes and mechanisms that characterize semi-arid climate change both regionally and globally. It explains systematically theoretical concepts , including land-atmosphere interactions, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and factors that contribute to climate change, including the impact of human activities. A summary of recent progress in the research in the field and the future of semi-arid regions are also discussed. This book is a specialized monograph and textbook for graduate students of Earth sciences. It is also suitable for undergraduate or graduate students in related majors such as those engaged in atmospheric science, climate change studies, and Earth sciences.

Until Bayard Rustins lecture in the fall of 1962, no other person had brought author Philip Reiss so far toward gaining an understanding of what it was like for African-Americans living as second-class citizens in this nation, which sponsors a pledge calling for liberty and justice for all. The Rustin lecture became Reisss point of departure on his quest to learn more fully of the African-American experience; it prompted him to become aware and to truly understand that the entire nation shared responsibility for the dilemma of deep-seated injustices that African-Americans constantly faced. In Blue Eyes on African-American History, Reiss provides an account of a white professors learning and teaching about African-American history from 1970 to 1999 at a SUNY community college. Reiss includes specifics of how and why he took on the challenge of teaching African-American history and discusses the historical events he deems critical for understanding of that history. His study relates the impact of economic exploitation facilitated by racism and how these twin evils are central to the African-American historical narrative. Along with factual history, this volume intersperses some of Resisss experiences as a young boy, as a young adult serving in the military, and as a professor teaching his course. It provides unique insight into a turbulent time in America.

Blue Texas written by Max Krochmal and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-07 with History categories.

This book is about the other Texas, not the state known for its cowboy conservatism, but a mid-twentieth-century hotbed of community organizing, liberal politics, and civil rights activism. Beginning in the 1930s, Max Krochmal tells the story of the decades-long struggle for democracy in Texas, when African American, Mexican American, and white labor and community activists gradually came together to empower the state's marginalized minorities. At the ballot box and in the streets, these diverse activists demanded not only integration but economic justice, labor rights, and real political power for all. Their efforts gave rise to the Democratic Coalition of the 1960s, a militant, multiracial alliance that would take on and eventually overthrow both Jim Crow and Juan Crow. Using rare archival sources and original oral history interviews, Krochmal reveals the often-overlooked democratic foundations and liberal tradition of one of our nation's most conservative states. Blue Texas remembers the many forgotten activists who, by crossing racial lines and building coalitions, democratized their cities and state to a degree that would have been unimaginable just a decade earlier--and it shows why their story still matters today.
