Experiences of Black Female Nurses in Connecticut, from 1900-1970, delves into the historical encounters and undertakings of black women in the nursing profession through primary source and secondary research. Archives, manuscripts, government documents, and individual accounts in relation to the nursing field were analyzed to give a fuller scope of nursing in Connecticut. These resources show the daily impact of nursing and the broader influence these individuals had with the nursing organizations they created, such as the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses, which influenced America’s health care system. Further, individual black nursing experiences were uncovered through research to bring these voices to the historical record. Historically, black nurses have been left out of the narrative, which does not give a complete account of the nursing profession. The findings in this thesis indicate that black women nurses were vital to the development and professionalization of nursing. Their efforts include, but are not limited to, establishing nursing’s place in American society, implementing proper training and educational programs for nursing candidates, and evolving the profession through the ups and downs of the seventy years examined.

The Invisible Black Nurse emerged from research grounded in historical reviews and contemporary perspectives that describe the experiences of Black nurses as their various roles as clinicians, educators, administrators and researchers. Recurring themes include feeling invisible, feeling devalued and being held to a higher standards than their peers in their professional role. She has presented her research at various professionaly nursing conferences and the Association of Psychiagtric Nursing. Her mission is to eliminate the phenomenon of "nurses eating their young" specifically nurses of color. Book Review 1: Black nurse's experiences with Racism may be normalized to the point of being invisible in various health care systems. Dr. Ora Robinson removes the invisibility by bringing the experiences of these nurses into full view. She speaks to the disproportionate negative impacts of racism as experienced by Black nurses. Each page turned, ushers the reader deeper into the world as experienced by the invisible Black nurse. -- Dr. Gloria J. Willingham-Toure", PhD, MNSc, BSN. Book Review 2: I have been acquainted with Dr. Ora Robinson over 20 years. I met her when she applied for a position as a professor in the Nursing Program. Our paths have crossed several times as fellow educators and in professional organizations. We have discussed and experienced the burden of racism disproportionately felt in various areas of the healthcare community. Having realized that this burden is too often silenced or ignored resulting in the Black nurse becoming invisible, Dr. Robinson began to explore and study the phenomenon. With sampling, she acquired evidence to begin addressing audiences. With information presented here, nurses will be inspired and encouraged to evaluate the visibility of all. -- Barbara Napper, MS, Ed. MSN, RN

Breaking The Glass Ceiling written by Jocelyn Hezekiah and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-07-19 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Breaking the Glass Ceiling documents the achievements of three leaders in Caribbean nurshing at the time of the nascent struggle for indigenous leadership in all areas of West Indian society. It is a narrative of the lives of three extraordinary women who gained both regional and international recognition: Dame Nita Barrow of Barbados, Berenice Dolly of Trinidad and Tobago, and Dr. Mary Sievwright of Jamaica. A feminist and colonialist theoretical perspective is used for the exploration of political, social and economic structures of the societies prior and during the nurses' era in order to provide a context for their achievements and contributions. They were bright, black women who embraced each challenge that came their way as an opportunity for growth. This growth was not for personal gain or self-aggrandizement but for the good of womankind and the nursing profession...The single common distinguishing feature of these three women was their selfless devotion to service. They worked relentlessly to improve the image of nursing, the nursing profession, and the status of women. Each one did so in her own unique way, and each had a deep, abiding religious faith. Their stories depict their different approaches to their service to women generally and nursing specifically, whether it was in the international arena, in the Caribbean setting or in their own native land. They were outstanding role models. They rose to prominence in a society in which racism, gender and class distinctions existed and did so with continued vitality and political savvy then most women at the time. They defied tradition within a traditional woman's occupation. They blazed the way for black women and nurses in particular to reach for the top. They were the first black women in nursing in the Caribbean to receive national and international acclaim, albeit not all to the same extent, and were the acknowledged role models for black nurses and women in the region.
