In this study of black factory workers, Bruce Williams analyzes the racial discrimination that persists in the workplace despite federal regulations aimed at expanding opportunities for minorities. Focusing on a suburban industrial plant, Williams presents a rich and convincing portrayal of the strategies and interactions that result in discrimination. Using as his case study a once predominantly white, working-class community, which is now home for more blacks than whites, Williams traces the changes in community norms and values as white residents responded to a mass influx of black residents. Williams explores the relationship between attitudes, structures, and actions in a suburban factory environment. He demonstrates how and why even in the most "progressive" work environment, good black workers are not welcome. White managers, management organizations, the union, and individual workers all play a role in determining the nature of race relations and the social environment of the workplace. Blacks are kept out of skilled and managerial positions and Williams finds that informal discrimination increases with the number of blacks applying for work. Williams also evaluate two major theories - the internal labor market and the human capital theory - that have been used to explain racial aversion within industry. He explodes the myth that job opportunities for working-class blacks will increase as they move out of the inner cities into the industrial suburbs and exurban areas. Through the eyes of local residents and workers he describes the personal impact on black workers of deindustrialization, the movement of industry from the Frost Belt to the Sun Belt, and technological innovation.

Do ominous reports of an emerging "underclass" reveal an unprecedented crisis in American society? Or are social commentators simply rediscovering the tragedy of recurring urban poverty, as they seem to do every few decades? Although social scientists and members of the public make frequent assumptions about these questions, they have little information about the crucial differences between past and present. By providing a badly needed historical context, these essays reframe today's "underclass" debate. Realizing that labels of "social pathology" echo fruitless distinctions between the "deserving" and "undeserving" poor, the contributors focus not on individual and family behavior but on a complex set of processes that have been at work over a long period, degrading the inner cities and, inevitably, the nation as a whole. How do individuals among the urban poor manage to survive? How have they created a dissident "infrapolitics?" How have social relations within the urban ghettos changed? What has been the effect of industrial restructuring on poverty? Besides exploring these questions, the contributors discuss the influence of African traditions on the family patterns of African Americans, the origins of institutions that serve the urban poor, the reasons for the crisis in urban education, the achievements and limits of the War on Poverty, and the role of income transfers, earnings, and the contributions of family members in overcoming poverty. The message of the essays is clear: Americans will flourish or fail together.

An investigation into absenteeism and labour turnover in 11 South African industrial units has indicated that: Absence and turnover levels compare favourably with those in industrial communities outside Africa -- Age, marital status, length of service and nett earnings are associated with absence rates and separation indices. Greater absence and separation proneness is found among young, unmarried, short-service, low earning men -- The greater the degree of urbanisation, the lower the incidence of separations -- Workers' rating on supervisors, supervisory practices and security can only be assessed in relation to the specific combination of managerial practices and supervisor adequacy obtaining in each particular industry -- A case study approach explains the particular pattern of absence and turnover rates in each enterprise. This approach also indicates that industrial stability, adequate remuneration and positive managerial interest are associated with stable work behaviour -- Absenteeism and labour turnover cannot be major factors detracting from productivity in South African industry. Facts concerning the actual level of productivity in the Union are a first requirement. research into the factors determining this level is also needed. Recommendations for the planning of such research are formulated.

On Melbenan Drive just west of Atlanta, sunlight falls onto a long row of well-kept lawns. Two dozen homes line the street; behind them wooden decks and living-room windows open onto vast woodland properties. Residents returning from their jobs steer SUVs into long driveways and emerge from their automobiles. They walk to the front doors of their houses past sculptured bushes and flowers in bloom. For most people, this cozy image of suburbia does not immediately evoke images of African Americans. But as this pioneering work demonstrates, the suburbs have provided a home to black residents in increasing numbers for the past hundred years—in the last two decades alone, the numbers have nearly doubled to just under twelve million. Places of Their Own begins a hundred years ago, painting an austere portrait of the conditions that early black residents found in isolated, poor suburbs. Andrew Wiese insists, however, that they moved there by choice, withstanding racism and poverty through efforts to shape the landscape to their own needs. Turning then to the 1950s, Wiese illuminates key differences between black suburbanization in the North and South. In some ways, no American city symbolizes the black struggle for civil rights more than Birmingham, Alabama. During the 1950s and 1960s, Birmingham gained national and international attention as a center of activity and unrest during the civil rights movement. Racially motivated bombings of the houses of black families who moved into new neighborhoods or who were politically active during this era were so prevalent that Birmingham earned the nickname “Bombingham.” In this critical analysis of why Birmingham became such a national flashpoint, Bobby M. Wilson argues that Alabama’s path to industrialism differed significantly from that of states in the North and Midwest. True to its antebellum roots, no other industrial city in the United States depended as much on the exploitation of black labor so early in its urban development as Birmingham.
