Blood gas tests are a group of tests that are widely used and essential for the evaluation and management of a patient’s ventilation, oxygenation, and acid-base balance, often in emergent situations, and along with blood gases are other critical care analytes measured on blood: calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and lactate. Blood Gases and Critical Care Testing: Clinical Interpretations and Laboratory Applications, Third Edition, serves as your single most important reference for understanding blood gases and critical care testing and interpretation. The third edition of this classic book is a complete revision and provides the fundamentals of blood gas (pH, pCO2, pO2) and other critical care tests (calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and lactate), including the history, the definitions, the physiology, and practical information on sample handling, quality control and reference intervals. Case examples with clear clinical interpretations of critical care tests have been included to all chapters. This book will serve as a valuable and convenient resource for clinical laboratory scientists in understanding the physiology and clinical use of these critical care tests and for providing practical guidelines for successful routine testing and quality monitoring of these tests. Provides a step-by-step approach for organizing and evaluating clinical blood gas and critical care test results Describes several calculated parameters that are used by clinicians for evaluating a patient’s pulmonary function and oxygenation status and discusses clinical examples of their use This new edition includes more detailed information about reference intervals, not only for arterial blood, but for venous blood and umbilical cord blood, and for pH in body fluids Covers practical information on sample handling and quality control issues for blood gas testing

Annotation Why the ABC's? When a patient is brought into a trauma center in extremis, or becomes that way for whatever reason, it's Airway, Breathing and Circulation. Nearly simultaneously with the treatment is the need to assess patient status or the results of treatment with measurements-the blood gases, ventilatory status, renal function, acid-base assessment and other directly related tests such as electrolytes, glucose or troponin. Our intent in this work is to provide the non-specialist physician, and those in the professional supporting professions, a quick overview of the testing performed in this environment. Since many of the tests have been added singly or in small groups over the years as the clinical and measurement technology evolved the rationale for the tests may have become less clear, especially to the non-specialist physician and to professionals in different parts of the support team. We begin with a clinical and physiologic overview of each of the key aspects in critical care testing and then present a cyclopedic dictionary of all (hopefully) of the terms used associated with these measurements. Since this last section is 'Cyclopedic', we don't limit our definitions to a 'Webster's' approach, but expand with personal vignettes, historical notes and detailed insight whenever possible. We hope you find this work enjoyable and useful.

When a patient is brought into a trauma center in extremis, or becomes that way during a hospital stay, the intervention mantra is airway, breathing and circulation—the ABC’s. We provide the nonspecialist physician, and those in the participating and supporting professions, a quick overview of the meaning of the testing terms in this environment. Many tests, added singly or in small groups over time as clinical and measurement technology evolved, but whose rationale may have become less clear, are defined and explained. Our format is simple—a brief overview of the physiologic environment and then the encyclopedic dictionary of the terminology. We include common terms as well as some of the confusing uses of terms besides lesser known facts influencing their clinical use on the basis of the analytical, medical, and managerial experience of the authors. Keep it in your lab coat pocket—you’ll find it useful in understanding and teaching!
