A story told about Navajo children during a traumatic period in history, whentheir people were captured, marched hundreds of miles, and were imprisonedin a camp for four years. Their strong foundation is what kept them going andhelped some of them survive. The story concentrates on a clan whose youngest being a three-month-old baby andthe oldest a sixteen-year-old. The children endured the harshness of the elementsand the US government. The children created a bond that would last foreverwith an elderly Navajo woman, who became their anchor when they could not find their loving parents. While the children were held captive, they carried onthe legacies of their clans. Some reunited with their parents and returned totheir homeland. With promises of better lives, the Navajo people were releasedto a land reserved within the four sacred mountains. They were forced to lead a different lifestyle, less flourishing than before, but they kept their families togetherand continued their traditional ways of life. This included the introduction ofa formal education. Navajo leaders figured that acquiring an education wouldplace them at an equal advantage of the dominant society. The children, however, had a different experience. In the end, most of them found balance in their lives back on their homeland.

Recently bereaved, George Newhouse, is an art historian and newly appointed curator at the National Gallery who becomes increasingly obsessed with a lost minor Dutch masterpiece, The Blue Horse by Van Doelenstraat. The painting’s provenance is disputed and many doubt its existence at all. But Newhouse has uncovered a letter by Rembrandt where the master states, ‘That damned painting vexes my mind’s eye’. As Newhouse struggles with his grief, his grip of reality slowly loosening, he embarks on surreal journey of loss and self-discovery, fuelled by alcohol, drugs and self-destructive behaviour. As the lines between reality and imagination blur, will George lose himself in his obsession or return from the brink of destruction in time? Highly atmospheric and exploiting many of the tropes of art appreciation, this is a compelling literary noir and remarkable debut by one of Scotland’s leading art correspondents. ‘There were times in Philip Miller’s The Blue Horse when I had to look away from the twilight art world his lyrical prose so effectively eviscerates. There is a tremendous sense of darkness here. And yet his strength as a storyteller, his ability to create multiple narratives of greed and grief; of blurred desire, pulled me back. There is an intoxication about this writing, a narcotic lure to its descriptions of ambition and decline but it never strays far from the simple art of a good story well told.’Toni Davidson, author of Scar Culture and My Gun Was As Tall As Me ‘I was disturbed... interesting and convincing’ Alasdair Gray

'Blue Horse Dreaming' is the riveting story of Abigail Buwell, who is kidnapped by a Native American tribe and later redeemed by U.S. military troops. Distraught at being returned, Abigail views her redemption as yet another captivity with freedom still agonizingly out of reach. Ultimately, she remains a captive on many levels — in the shackles of otherness, language, physical confinement, womanhood, and motherhood. 'Blue Horse Dreaming' is also the story of Major Robert Cutter, the man into whose hands Abigail is delivered. Through his tormented eyes, we see a vividly compelling portrayal of life on a far-flung military outpost in the aftermath of the Civil War where troops and civilians suffered from crushing poverty, famine, and illness, just beyond the traces of an emigrant trail whose way is marked by gravesites. This is a novel of hauntings and of the haunted, in which the ghosts of the past, both beloved and despised, raise their heads to compete for the souls of the living left behind.
