Since the beginnings of Italian vernacular literature, the nature of the relationship between Francesco Petrarch (1304-1374) and his predecessor Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) has remained an open and endlessly fascinating question of both literary and cultural history. In this volume nine leading scholars of Italian medieval literature and culture address this question involving the two foundational figures of Italian literature. Through their collective reexamination of the question of who and what came between Petrarch and Dante in ideological, historiographical, and rhetorical terms, the authors explore the emergence of an anti-Dantean polemic in Petrarch's work. Car Boccace reprend à nouveaux frais la réflexion de Cicéron et de Sénèque sur la possibilité d'intégrer les biens secondaires, « préférables » (la renommée, le pouvoir, la richesse, l'amitié ou l'amour) dans la recherche de la sagesse et de la félicité mondaine, répondant aux exigences spirituelles des milieux courtisans. Les nouvelles montrent les conséquences extrêmes ainsi que l'échec de cette tentative, quand les biens préférables deviennent les biens « désirables », visant toujours un surcroît. Au-delà d'une fresque de la « société marchande médiévale », le Décaméron s'interroge sur la logique dévastatrice de l'intérêt propre. Rien ne dit que la peste soit finalement passée. Les personnages des dernières nouvelles, tous des exemples des "grandes âmes", magnanimes et surtout magnifiques, ne sont ni l'expression d'un itinéraire chrétien, ni la transformation de la « patience » stoïcienne.
