Atisha Dipamkara Srijnana, pandit Buddhis yang berasal dari Bengali (India) merupakan kepala biara Wikramashila. Guru Atisha merupakan tokoh penting dalam penyebaran Agama Buddha pada abad ke-11 di Asia dan menginspirasi pemikiran Buddhis dari Tibet sampai Sumatra (Indonesia). Beliau melakukan perjalanan ke Kerajaan Sriwijaya (Indonesia) dan menetap selama 13 tahun untuk belajar Buddhadharma dari Suwarnadwipa Dharmakirti (Serlingpa). Pemahaman lengkap dan menyeluruh yang sudah diperoleh menyebabkan beliau beraktivitas lebih luas lagi, salah satunya di Tibet. Janji Guru Atisha pada Jangchub Ö, seorang raja Tibet yang merupakan murid beliau, merupakan alasan yang mencetuskan digubahnya karya ini. Jangchub Ö memohon Guru Atisha mengajarkan Jalan yang lengkap dan tanpa kesalahan, mudah untuk dipraktikkan, dan bermanfaat bagi semua orang di Tibet yang di kala itu sedang mengalami kebingungan mempraktikkan ajaran dan mencoba menafsirkan Sang Jalan menurut pemahaman mereka sendiri. Kondisi yang terjadi di Tibet saat itu sama dengan yang dialami oleh umat Buddhis di Indonesia sekarang ini. Beberapa dari mereka mempelajari hal yang lagi trend, tanpa memastikan apakah itu ajaran yang tepat, menganalisis guru yang mengajarkan dan merujuk pada referensi yang benar. Lalu, mengambil kesimpulan dengan pemahamannya sendiri dan tidak menyadari kenyataan bahwa hal buruklah yang meningkat pada dirinya. Karya ini juga mendapat banyak pujian dari para pandit zaman itu, termasuk Ratnakara (tetua di Biara Wikramashila). Penyajian yang hemat kata tetapi mendalam, lengkap dari keseluruhan rentang topik yang diajarkan dalam semua Sutra dan Tantra, dan oleh karenanya karya ini memungkinkan seseorang untuk mengenali semua kitab sebagai instruksi yang mencerahkan dirinya dan semua instruksi/ajaran Buddha tak satupun yg saling bertentangan. Karya ini merupakan karya pertama yang merangkum semua ajaran Buddha dalam satu kumpulan yang dinamakan Bodhipathapradipa.
