Toponiemen zijn namen die eeuwenlang in gebruik waren voor akkers, weilanden, bossen, beemden en andere landschapselementen. De oude namen vertellen het verhaal van het landschap, de planten- en dierenwereld en de landbouw gezien door de ogen van de bewoners van eeuwen geleden. Het merendeel van de toponiemen heeft betrekking op de natuur: bomen, bossen, onkruiden, vogels, zoogdieren, terwijl een ander belangrijk deel te maken heeft met de landbouw, zoals de geteelde gewassen, de vruchtbaarheid van de akkers en de vorm van de percelen. Doordat de akkers veranderden in woonwijken, fabrieksterreinen en wegen, of hun oorspronkelijke vorm verloren bij ruilverkavelingen, zijn in de laatste halve eeuw de oude namen grotendeels verdwenen. Zo ging het ook in het gebied van de Baronie van Breda. Het grootste deel van de veldnamen in de Baronie van Breda, ettelijke tienduizenden, kon opgespoord worden in archieven, een ander deel was nog bekend bij oude boeren. De toponiemen van de Baronie vertegenwoordigen een grote cultuurhistorische schat, een schat die in dit boek systematisch ontsloten wordt en voor het nageslacht bewaard. De oudste in de archieven opgetekende naam van de Baronie dateert van het jaar 709: Alfeim, het huidige Alphen, maar er zijn waarschijnlijk nog oudere toponiemen die zelfs teruggaan tot de prehistorie. Het gros van de namen stamt echter uit de Middeleeuwen of de vroegmoderne tijd. Talrijk zijn de namen die te maken hebben met de hoogteligging, zoals donk, berg, heuvel, dal, goor, broek en poel. Gezien namen als Arendsvlucht, Wolfsput, Beversluis en Otterkil, kwamen uitgestorven dieren als de zeearend, de wolf, de bever en de otter vroeger op diverse plaatsen in de Baronie voor. Het onderzoek naar toponiemen leverde ook honderden namen op die wijzen op archeologisch interessante plaatsen, zoals de namen met tommel, donder en steen.

Since his first article in 1976 the American historian Robert P. Brenner has tried to come to terms with an issue first raised two centuries ago: how can we explain the differences in growth-patterns of North Western European countries in the transition from feudalism to capitalism.
