Bolivian Labor Immigrants' Experiences in Argentina examines the projects, trajectories, and everyday lives of Bolivian immigrants. It gathers research results of specialists who have studied the various ways in which these immigrants participate in certain labor markets in different urban and rural areas of Argentina. It covers many aspects, including future prospects, and the influence of the juxtaposition of various inequalities. It highlights the ways in which xenophobic mechanisms naturalize harsh working and living conditions. The volume opens new horizons regarding novel migratory territories recently built by Bolivian laborers in Argentina. It collects the results of longstanding anthropology studies in different Provinces: Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, Río Negro, Salta, and Tierra del Fuego. It refers to the trajectories of some Bolivians who had previously migrated to Spain and returned to Argentina after the European crisis in 2008. It also compares the south-south labor migration from Bolivia to Argentina, with the north-north one from Tajikistan to the Russian Federation. Bolivian Labor Immigrants' Experiences in Argentina highlights key issues regarding the structural factors that pattern the integration of Bolivian immigrants in certain labor markets segmented by inequalities based on class, gender, “ethny-race”, nationality, and migratory and legal status. It provides ethnographic insights about the various ways in which Bolivian immigrants experience harsh living and working conditions. Finally, it helps to understand that these men and women are capable of dealing with oppressive situations and of performing particular ways of resistance. The focus on labor migrants does not lead to a reductionist economic analysis of their trajectories, experiences, and prospects for the future. On the contrary, they are studied from a holistic anthropological approach, considering that migrants make sense of their territorial mobility from complex points of view anchored in their life experiences. Therefore, contributors consider that migration is a process that involves economic, social, cultural, and political dimensions

Old Colony Mennonites In Argentina And Bolivia written by Lorenzo Cañás Bottos and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-31 with Religion categories.

This volume challenges received images of Old Colony Mennonites as ‘living in the past' or perfect examples of community. Through the concept of the ‘imagination of the future’ this book presents an analysis of their historical transformations as the result of attempting to apply in practice their Christian ideals of building a community of believers in the world, while remaining separate from it. It argues that while they contributed to the territorialisation of the states that hosted them through their migrations from sixteenth-century Europe to late twentieth-century Latin America, they systematically rejected being incorporated into the nation through the building of a community of agricultural settlements that maintain ties across international borders. It explores how these imaginations are maintained and transformed through the analysis of schisms, conflict, and border management, together with a biographical approach to conversion narratives, and the religious experience.

In the late nineteenth century, the disintegration of the silver-mining economy that had survived since the colonial period effected fundamental economic and social changes in southern Bolivia. The changes took three forms: increased conflict between peasants and elites, expanded concentration of land into large estates, and worsened labor conditions among the peasants. This study concentrates on the four provinces in the department of Chuquisaca, using them as case studies of how and why rural peoples adapted to and resisted the changes in their lives. Resistance took many forms: strikes, rebellions, insurrections, court challenges, banditry, and flight. In the reactions to change in these provinces, the author sees certain common characteristics that transcend the region and can be discerned in other parts of Latin America. On the basis of the Chuquisaca experience, he also questions the validity of current theories of peasant resistance and rebellion. The author describes the reactions of the oligarchy based in Sucre, the capital, to the decline of silver as Bolivia's major export, showing how they attempted to regain their preeminent financial and political position by a number of strategies, notably the expansion of the hacienda system. This expansion gave rise to different problems in each of the four provinces: in Yamparaez, fierce resistance by the Indian communities to any changes; in Cinti, violent labor disputes brought on by the creation of enormous agro-industrial estates; in Azero, Indian attempts to escape debt peonage by migrating or by joining Franciscan missions; and in Tomina, widespread banditry. The final chapter compares and contrasts the various forms of rural resistance in the context of their social, economic, and cultural foundations.

Workers From The North written by Scott Whiteford and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-19 with Social Science categories.

International migration between countries in Latin America became increasingly important during the twentieth century, but for a long time it was the subject of only limited research. Whiteford sets the Argentina-Bolivia experience in historical perspective by examining the macrolevel factors that influenced social change in both countries and brought streams of migration into Argentina. Seasonal labor, the expansion of capitalist agriculture, international migration, and urbanization are central topics in this in-depth study of Bolivian migrants in Northwest Argentina. Whiteford’s vivid portrayal of the lives and working conditions of the migrants is based on two years of research during which he lived with the workers on a sugar plantation and, after the harvest, accompanied them to other farms and to the city of Salta in their search for more work. He traces the development of plantation agriculture in Northwest Argentina and the processes by which the plantation gained access to cheap labor and maintained control over it. As Bolivians migrated to Argentina in ever greater numbers, many recruited for the harvest remained. Whiteford’s analysis of the diverse strategies employed by workers and their families to support themselves during the post-harvest season is a major contribution to migration literature. The four distinct but related patterns of migration that he describes created a labor reserve that transcends rural/urban designations, one that is utilized by employers in both the countryside and the city.
